ACG 2009 Philippine Representative

Posted by polar on June 17th, 2009 | Visited 4476 times, 2 so far today

It’s official. Team Flow, Philippine representative to the Asian Cyber Games 2006 and 2007, is the 2009 Philippine representative. Team Flow is composed of Arby Ng, Marvin Tan, Jojo Uy, Bryan Ang, and Vinzyre Villeguez. The famed Team Flow has been a force to reckon with since they burst out into the DotA scene more than four years ago.

In 2006, they won the local qualifiers against veterans 129. Flow represented the Philippines in the Asian Cyber Games in Singapore but lost to the eventual champions. In 2007, Flow decimated Ninja in the local qualifiers and represented the Philippines once again. That year, Flow gave the Philippines it’s first ACG medal as the team finished 3rd place.

Last year, despite inactivity as a team, they forged on to join the local qualifiers. The team was intact and tackled the qualifiers lightly but with the determination to prove that their teamwork and experience would be enough to make them Philippine representatives once again. They lost to the supercharged Team Mineski.

This year, teams have been working hard, re-organizing, and practicing to prepare for what was to be the greatest annual DotA tournament in the country with the pride of being Team Philippines at stake. Bad news, however, greeted all teams as it was announced that Team Flow will once again represent Philippines.

I have nothing against Team Flow. In fact, I am a great admirer of their team. I acknowledge their strengths as a team, and their personalities as individuals. I am friends with all of them.

It is with great regret, however, that I would like to question the way they were chosen to represent the country and flag. I have no doubt that the team can bring great pride to the country, but at what expense??? Teams, including Mineski and my own team here in Davao City, have been persevering for months in order to prepare for the ACG Qualifiers. This is a big blow to the hard-working DotA players in the country.

This is a bigger slap to Team Mineski who has been working very hard to defend their title and get the second chance to bring pride to the country. As I am not directly involved in the situation, I would like to direct you to these accounts by Team Mineski as to how and why they were not chosen to represent Philippines this year.

While I share some of the sentiments stated in the Mineski Forums, I would like to ask that we do not cloud the issues at hand by throwing malicious and unfounded damaging statements against Flow and its members. Let us not resort to character assassination and pointless, illogical speculation. Rather, let us show them that we are better than that, that we take these things seriously and professionally.

I, for one, am very disappointed at what happened, but I cannot help but be happy that Flow is representing the country. I am not 100% sure that they are the best team to do so right now, but I am sure as hell that they will try their hardest. They’ve been there before and they have already proven a lot. Let’s not attack them as a team or individually as I am sure they have had no hand in the way things happened.

As representative of the Davao teams, I would like to express great disappointment at the lack of qualifiers for the ACG. The organizers should have worked harder to make things happen. They are accountable not just to the ACG organization, but more importantly to the community of gamers in the Philippines. An official statement is warranted. Otherwise, there is no way for the community to go other than protest and petition for the organizers for next year to be changed.

Nonetheless, I would like to say to Team Flow GLHF!

  27. polar Says:

@Newskin, PLEASE LEARN HOW TO READ AND COMPREHEND! I do not have anything against Flow or Mineski. What I am questioning is the way/process that Flow was chosen.

Truth be told, I am better friends/closer to the Flow members. But IMHO, Mineski worked harder and probably deserves to be the ACG Reps more. But friendship or my opinion of their skills is not the issue is. The issue is the incapacity of the current ACG Philippines Organizers to do what is best for the DotA community.
