Dota in the future - DPSgeddon?

First.

In case you didn’t know, I got massive support for the RAL post, even warranting a separate coverage in Playdota. For that, thanks a lot to the people who read it and made it more viral. Your support goes a long way towards maintaining the supremacy of DS in the Dota blogosphere :D

2nd.

I believe that more people are going to blog here, so you will not be just hearing from me. In fact, you’ll be hearing from them quite soon, so support them as you did royalty. Of course, first preferences to royalty. :P

3rd.

In the RAL post I made a brief mention of the term DPSgeddon and made some brief allusions. Here, I will explain what I had alluded to.

I think as far as the RAL is concerned for now, there can be no more illusions - it is only the fool who would neglect the trio and think they are insignificant. However, the frog would not like to see a permanent dominance of the RAL, and is doing his best to make sure they will not appear in the banlists of the future. The trends all point to one way.

That the frog will continue to buff the “DPS” heroes - in formal jargon heroes depending on physical attacks - until they are so overpowered to the point that the leaguers will be forced to take notice.

___________________________________________________________________

In some ways this has already happened. An increasing number of bans in league now involve the said DPS heroes - among them Broodmother, Viper, Syllabear, Morphling, Slardar and Enchantress.*** One need only check the 6.63b changelog and notice that Huskar, Sniper, Troll and Nightstalker, among others keep receiving buffs that many pub players have never imagined would take place. I need not explain in detail the buffs on other DPS heroes in the recent changelogs. Those who have true sight - and I mean true - will only conclude one thing:

The next versions of Dota will be so DPS heavy, it will be a case of picking just one or even two DPS heroes and witness an Armageddon taking place. It will be very much like in 6.49 where Luna - one DPS - can just tank all 5 enemy heroes and kill 3 or 4 in the process. For your information this scenario - Luna 1v5 - has happened before, with awe-shocking consequences. Imagine this happening on almost every DPS hero (especially with the necessary support) and what you get is taking the first 4 letters off Armageddon and replace it with DPS.

DPSGEDDON.

That’s right. I’m issuing this warning of a DPSgeddon in the future. Players specializing in DPS will have much cause to rejoice, because a tremendous opportunity is finally now within their reach. This also implies that many pubbies will be very happy with the future versions, because their favorite heroes are just that much stronger. On the other hand, many veterans, even leaguers, even myself (I am actually very good with the RAL if you didn’t know :P ) will find themselves out of place, their skills not as useful anymore. Unless leaguers make quick adjustments and stop insisting on a quick-gank playstyle, they will lose easily to a DPSgeddon-oriented lineup. I’m afraid, this time the frog will not listen to Kuroky’s pleas for a return to the gank-heavy era of 6.48b. (Check the RAL post for more details)

I do acknowledge that leaguers command tremendous influence in Dota. However whether the leaguers like it or not the frog will impose the DPSgeddon and those who do not recognize the warning signs will be vaporized in the cloud of DPS smoke. If, after so many buffs on DPS heroes, the leaguers still refuse to play them, I believe the frog will force a “remake” of certain DPS heroes that is even more overpowered than the old incarnation. We need not look far to see what the “remakes” of Visage and Enchantress have done to leaguers, one in 6.52, another in the now 6.63b.

Could this be a hidden reason why Jacob “Maelk” Toft-Andersen decided he will retire from Dota, other reasons aside? I’m not saying that Maelk is terrible at DPS though, but his specialty heroes when playing league have so far excluded most heroes you would term DPS. :P

___________________________________________________________________

However this does not mean that support heroes especially the RAL will lose their dominance. In fact their position will be even more comfortably entrenched because of it. One does not need to be the Emperor to command the Empire. In fact, all one needs to do is to be the High Priest influencing the Emperor. One case in mind - Bane has his Enfeeble skill causing a 120% loss of DPS. Imagine how convenient that would be when you square off against a DPS.

The greatest losers in the coming DPSgeddon will be the gank cum AoE spell heroes, while the greatest winners, aside from the DPS, the supports who will anoint them as the messiahs of the future. And in most of Dota history, the greatest winners of all, no matter what the frog does, have always been the supports - the High Priests, the Chens, the Dazzles, the RAL, the Vengeful Spirits, the Warlocks. Their scant record of kills is only to disguise their real power which they have always exercised, with deadly effect, behind the scenes.

Now, should we be so surprised that pubbies keep insisting on Sniper permapicks? Maybe I should try permapicking Sniper for a change. :P

woah nice blog post again men…thanks for the early warning

well…the dawn of DPSgeddon,The rise of turtling ownage, slow early games , i would really miss the super gank ownage games, they are just pure fun to watch.but this also means that we might as well be seeing 2 full carries in a game…..turtle and win!!!
Mr. Frog should balance the DPS kin along with the Gank kin to create a ,…..well moar balanced game.i mean i would like to see more different, like all the 95 heros being picked in different games.but thats just IMO.

  3. KingV Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if IceFrog jacked the -ar command to always give at least 2 DPS per team :)) But that’s just me, I’m paranoid lately.

  4. Ghost Says:

expect to see more Magnus in the future.
just a suspicion I’ve been having… but then, dagger nerfs…
    but then… still awesome.
it’s iffy, but I don’t see Lothars showing up any time soon.

also while DPS heroes will be buffed to the point of imbaness, Permabashing heroes (who all seem to double as DPS) will be given some rather subtle but nasty drawbacks, not much, but enough to make them just a little less viable then their regular DPS counterparts.

  5. SINclare21 Says:

    That’s a bit of a surprise…..
I’m a DPS user myself, so i guess I’ll be looking forward to this.
    Gj prince!

  6. DaMan Says:

Whether we like it or not, DPS are still the weakest heroes in the game. Unless Icefrog can find a way to enhance their early-game survivability, they will still remain unpicked. I’ve started to notice that heroes like Lion Druid actually don’t need that much farming to become a DPS beast. This will probably be a challenge for Icefrog-to balance the item dependancy of DPS heroes. For now, disables and AOE always wins no matter what lineup you are against. BKB will probably be seen more often since it will be the “essential” item for almost all DPS heroes.

    Dawn of the Apocalypse coming..
Sucks for me, I am the support guy.

  8. Ponton Says:

You write things about DotA actually interesting

  9. bim Says:

its the power creep. it happens in all games. If anyone here every played Guild Wars you know what i mean. Something gets too strong so instead of nerfing it you buff everything else, and the cycle continues until the game is ridiculous

  10. Stealth Says:

    Congratz!

  11. reiva00 Says:

Agree with Caspian and I knew what he meant by the DPSgeddon on his RAL blog. The obvious trend was obvious…

What stranger_mur said about seeing more 2 carry picks per team in games is already actually happening. I noticed it back in 6.61b. If you guys don’t believe me, check out replays on dota.replays.net and gosugamers.net/dota.

Teams picking SF+Slar, Morph+Syllar, Visage+Spectre. The trend has already come, and if the Frog will choose to go down this road for his next updates, then DPSgeddon will be upon us.

  12. SerpentSon Says:

Man, nice blog post and all, but too far wit the speculation. Maelk didn’t retire because of the nerf/buff trends in dota.

    http://www.fragster.de/artikel/8905/dota-interview-with-mymmaelk-maelk-esport-needs-uefa_dota/

I think if you haven’t read maelk’s interview, then you should.

Also, with the forthcoming DPSgeddon, a lot of the time the dps’ers will be looking to get a BKB to prevent as many disables as possible, possibly pointing to a counter-focus on all the heroes with skills (especially disables) that go through BKB. Take note of which ones they are, there’s a list floating around somewhere.. either here or on DA, I forget….

  13. SerpentSon Says:

    Oh yeah, one more thing..

    http://www.dotastrategy.com/forum/ftopic22969.html&highlight=viable+strategies

I posted that way back when .60 first came out, an guess what I said? More farm time and more carries were coming into play. Now, the prince agrees with me :D It’s like.. validation!

  14. SK Says:

Tank is much more chosen over DPS. Very imba for DPS if you ask me…

  15. kishiki Says:

damnn…thats really saddening…wat happens to int type heroes? or skill type ones…i hope the frog will take better judgement in the future…

This just means that dpsers will be buffed reaching the point of imbaness even if some of them are already imba during the 59-60 v. also as compliment to carry heroes frog (maybe he had other purpose) introduced two new early game items the QB and PMS which is conspicuously useful with the dps heroes since they are mostly melee and early game fragile.

well, most of them are still balanced as of now except ganking dps heroes like spectre and riki which was really powerful and hard to kill dpser during midgame. I even saw a HARASSED riki in a pub DOMINATE the rest of the game.

  18. DokuX Says:

I agree, as soon as 6.60 came out, a friend and I stopped playing DotA for a good 2-3 months. The first thing we said when we saw it was, “Wow, everybody is a hero killer now.” There were virtually no support heroes, or heroes that took any amount of skill to play. I think that the mass damaging heroes should be the heroes that take a large amount of skill to play. Now a days, any noob can join a game and start raping because 80% of the heroes are so imba that they can just faceroll and win. How bout we just bring back the old Naix and watch everyone quit DotA.

  19. Lolopo Says:

Sorry I also forgot come to think of it. If DPS heroes will be buffed then will the disablers too. but still dps heroes has the more advantage since most of the items in DotA are more dps oriented and the ganking items(i.e. lothars and dagger) also can solve the dps problem of getting disabled before getting near the target.

but still i think the buffs were unfair to some weak dps and int heroes .if troll was buffed(well super imba ms and as also midgame damage and armor) then morty must also be buffed too!!! and so on…
