Ronald Robinson “Roro” Robins: Mineski Team Leader

Even before I knew the names of the prominent players and teams in Metro Manila, I already heard the name Roro. Roro is often mentioned and praised by local gamers here in Davao City. Who, you might ask, is Roro? That’s one of the questions that have been bugging my mind. Not to mention, the many requests I get for a feature on the guy. So without further ado, let me introduce to you Ronald Robinson “Roro” Robins, Mineski Team Leader. Now known as “mski.scofield,” 21-year old Roro (born May 25, 1986) is already the Vice President for Operations at the company he is working for. He graduated from the De La Salle University on 2006.
Roro, whose current favorite hero is Rhasta, got interested in DotA-Allstars due to the prodding of his older brother. He shares his first DotA experience…
…it was feb 2005 when i started playing, i cant forget the day that it was a Valentines Day, we had a triple date: Khen, Roro and Richmond at SM Megamall. The funny thing about it is while we were having a date the 3 of us were just reading the print out i brought containing how to make items…
Roro continued playing the game because it was fun. Eventually, he also enjoyed the competitive nature of the game. Right now, his work limits his practices to days leading to tournaments. If there are no tournaments ahead, he doesn’t practice. He just cooks up scenarios in his head before he sleeps.
Before he became a professional, Roro used to play pub games where he was able to develop his skills. He used to play eight hours a day with Ken over at 168 Morato. They were then playing with Roro’s older brother and his friends. Roro and his team used to just follow and learn what the other teams were doing.
Eventually, he learned how to develop his own strategies. These unique and surprising strategies catapulted Mineski into the popularity it now enjoys. Mineski always has a new trick up its sleeve. The team is known for pioneering the use of Pugna, Sniper, and Jakiro. This pioneering line-up led Mineski to the championships which also inspired other teams to follow suit. For every game, every tournament they join, Roro and the rest of Mineski always shows something new because Roro does not want to see the look of boredom on his teammates’ names.
Roro shares that “some strategies just pop-out of my mind and we play it.” Meanwhile, there are some strategies that he has already thought of but haven’t utilized yet, and then he sees it being used on international replays by global teams. One example of this is how he used to think of Rexxar’s potential to pull creeps. He used to call the play as the “Scourge’s 4th lane.” Roro, however, explains that the tricks and strategies that Mineski uses are not his alone but a product of the minds of all of Mineski’s players.
Roro believes that his real edge over other players is his ability to trashtalk without it leading to a fight. He also attributes his success in DotA to the inspiration given to him by Sharon Chua, his girlfriend for almost three years (their anniversary is on September 22). He thinks that playing DotA competitively has made him learn the value of time management. Balancing and budgeting his time for his work, his studies, his girlfriend, DotA, and personal time is hell, according to Roro. DotA makes Roro tired, and it cuts his work time and quality time for Sharon. Nonetheless, he remains committed to the game.
Roro shares he is able to judge other people’s character by watching them play. This he learned by playing the game. He has also learned that fear should never cloud one’s judgment. One hesitation can already give your team an avoidable loss.
He asserts that a lot goes into winning team games, but the most important thing is teamwork. Roro shares that noobs “think a single player can win it all but it always take the whole team to win and a whole team to lose.” With this in mind, Roro and Ken built the current Mineski Team. The original Mineski included khenmineski, Lheneski, and whaleneski. In 2006, the roster changed to include 7-nengxiang, dib, and wal-burn. The current Mineski team is composed of Roro, memelneski, holyman, markymark, carlo, and khenmineski. Through the years, Roro and Ken stuck together, eventhough Ken almost killed Roro via a car accident. Ken has been with Roro the from the first day he transferred to Manila from his hometown, Cebu.
Although Roro is the founder of Mineski, he never appointed himself as the team’s leader. But being that his teammates would listen to his commands during games, he became Mineski’s Team Leader, their Boss. (Roro adds that Sharon is still the Boss of all Bosses.)
Roro, with Mineski, have joined and won countless of tournaments since 2005. He counts the WCG Tournaments as the most memorable ones. Before the 2006 WCG and after the 2007 WCG, Mineski were back-to-back champions in other tournaments. But somehow, they have not won the elusive WCG medal yet. Mineski is just waiting for their chance to represent the country.
According to Roro, Mineski’s edge over other teams are their “flexibility of heroes and genuine strategies that are originally MINESKI.” He shares that he is most threatened by themselves. He reiterates that
to win a game is make no mistakes. To lose a game you have to make a mistake. It’s like playing golf. All other enemies are just like PAR. When you go over the par you lose. As simple as that, DotA is like a ball it can easily go either way.
Although he is not threatened by them, Roro admires the teams who have accomplished a lot like Team 129, the LEGENDS; Flow, the back-to-back WCG country representatives; Ninja, who is always present; and Papi, who is their constant rival in all events.
Although Roro and Mineski are very successful, Roro admits to committing mistakes that he regrets. He shares that
everybody makes mistakes. The challenge there is knowing when to admit one’s mistake. I always admit my mistakes and my teammates laugh about it, I don’t mind. It’s a good way to remind ourselves not to do it again.
Roro is glad the the game is gaining more popularity. As a result, the game is also improving. He also attributes the development and popularity of the game to the organizers, sponsors, and other people who work hard to make the game competitive. He thinks that there is a chance for pro gaming to prosper in the Philippines, if more people dedicate themselves to the profession. He believes that perseverance and sound marketing strategies will bring the dream into reality. He thinks it can also be achieved by giving a strong performance in international abroad to lure the sponsors into the country.
Roro thinks that “my time will soon lapse. It’s time to pass the torch to a younger generation.” He advices other players to follow their beliefs and to not let anything stop them from achieving their dreams. In the end, he asserts that “It takes 5 to win and 5 to lose. Teamwork is the name of the game.”

I never would have thought that my boss, Sir ROro, is a Mineski team leader. Honestly, i don’t know anything about the game but one thing i know, my boss is at his best when playing it. I saw his trophy as proof.
One other thing I observed is that when he focused on something he’s good at, the results were quite impressive. A very collected and fair boss, i might say. I’m very proud of you, sir. Keep up the good work!

I’m just a beginner, so my classmates always calling me a WEAK. I start playing dota last June of this year but when i red your story i realize it is not just a game but also teamwork,perseverance and have a nice and clean game. So I decide to follow your footsteps and use your tips like have a balanced time in my life. Thank you for you story now i have my 1 idol in DOTA.
