Better known as Lutan by gamers, Marvin L. Tan, who will celebrate his 21st birthday on September 26, was part of the famed Team Flow that represented and earned a medal for Team Philippines. Lutan now faces an uncertain future as a gamer as he embarks on the challenge of competing with a new team. Meanwhile, he is also facing the stressful life as a college student majoring in Management at the De La Salle University - College of St. Benilde.

Lutan started playing DotA All-Stars when Roi, his friend, told him about it. He continued playing the game because he enjoyed it and had the desire to improve. With constant practice, Lutan became a better player. From watching replays and experimenting, Lutan also learned and developed new strategies. His current favorite heroes are Nevermore, Lightning Revenant and other intelligence type heroes.

Right now, DotA is a big part of Lutan’s life. He thinks that proper time management is the key to having a balanced life despite of DotA addiction. He advices DotA addicts to be responsible enough not to neglect their other responsibilities such as their studies, their families, and their girlfriends. From playing DotA, Lutan has learned the values of teamwork, patience, persistence, and, humility. In fact, Lutan shares that being boastful and arrogant are two of the worst mistakes that can spell disaster for new players and teams. He believes that the best thing about the game is the feeling of winning, while the worst things are the amount of time and money it consumes.

As a player, Lutan gives much value to teamwork and cooperation. He advises players to always trust their teammates. Aside from constant practice, and enjoying the game, he emphasizes the fact that successful teams have players who do not play the blame game.

Along with Bru and Jojo Uy, Arby Ng recruited Lutan from their Warpoint Teams to join Team Flow. Lutan believes that their team gained so much success because each member was aware of his role, performed it, and each one of them was good individually.

Since Flow has broken- up, Lutan has banded with his friends and formed a new team tentatively called b.a.k.l.a. The team name is formed from their initials. He admits that this team is weaker than Flow, given that they are starting from scratch, while Flow was already a veteran team. From among their competition, he believes that Teams Ninja, Papi, and Mineski are the best in the country right now. These three teams, according to Lutan, are already the best and are still improving.

Right now, Lutan does not see the chance for pro-gaming to prosper in the country due to the lack of sponsors. He thinks that a strong, competitive team should be built. That team will then spark the interest of sponsors.

Having shared his wisdom as a gamer, Lutan leaves these final words about DotA: “dota panilat ng love life, LOL!”
