New to site and in despirate need of help.

Posted: Sun Mar 09, 2008 10:00 am

Hey everyone, found the site in hope it will improve my gameplay and strat development as well as learns the trades of the game. lol

I just have a few general questions at first, and if they're on the site I apologize for not seeing it. Ok, here's my status, I have played DotA off and on since the newer version came out. (older version had lvl 10 max cap) Currently, my playstyle is mostly ranged, and my performance is basically "enemy feeder", Normally 10 deaths and 0 kills per game.

1) What class (preferably ranged)is a good beginner class. ( I can try and find a strat guide on the site for it)

2) Ways to improve my gameplay solo, any possible/known addons?

3) Any other general advice about the game would be appreciated.

Thank you for your advice everyone. Anything will help me in this game because I want to be a viable player. TY again in advance.
Smile

1) I highly would not recommend Kardel as there are only the amazing Kardel players, and the bad ones. Agility is a good starter "class" (we call them attribute) for beginners. Because they're ranged, they have an easy time earning kills. An Agi hero with an escape skill is also recommended such as Bone Clinx, Morphling, or Akasha.

2) A good way to improve your game is to know basic game tactics. One of which is Last-Hitting. Of course, a good way to earn gold is to kill enemy creeps. But if you dont get the Last hit on the creep, you wont earn the gold. Thats why you hold "Alt" to see their HP, and only attack when the creeps HP is red and enough for you to get the kill. It may seem complicated at first, but practice makes perfect.

3) This is a game of teamwork. Cooperation with your allies can make devastating combos. This is what makes Dota such a good game. Hundreds of skill synergize with each other in so many different ways. And with 80+ (i think) heroes to choose from, the possibilities are endless.

Oh by the way, I notice this is your first post. Welcome to DS, and I hope you stay active.

i still remember when i started..

first time i played, i chose Mortred..

then when i got addicted to dota, i still played melee heroes, i never started using range heroes until it was time to move on to other characters..

THE THING IS:
for me, i think, if beginners use range heroes, tendency is they keep out of range of battle, they also tend to stay so far away that no experience or contact happens..

i believe using melee heroes as beginners is the best way to start, because starting at a difficult level poses a great challenge, and once you got over it, you could easily handle range battles.

Newbie Friendly Melee Heroes are:
Abaddon
Leoric

But if you insist on using Range:
Jahrakal
Razor

If you want to improve your solo play, then go AI, always start with an advantage, like having an AI ally, then easily work your way through.. then at last, play against AI handicap mode in which you are outnumbered.

GREATEST ADVICE IS: DONT USE CHEATS WHEN PLAYING 1vs1.. You won't earn anything from it and you will stay a loser if you use cheats.

About good guides, the library is a good place to start, especially ghost's guide to dota (as of the latest version). it covers all the basic and several more advanced tactics.

As for ranged heros to begin with; Razor is a good choice, a good nuke, two passives (including ult) and one flat aspd increase, just go for the treads, skadi, mjoliner combo and you should do ok.

Good luck and stay active

(1) play kardel, then play melee like abaddon and leoric

(2) learn basic techniques and strategy - follow Counter_Force[X]'s link

(3) just continue playing and get experiences

Ghost's guide is definitely a step up to try and learn dota... It explains most everything you need except specific hero strategies...
As for the starter hero, I dunno man, I started practicing hard with N'aix (old one), but just because I owned big time with him once... It was so easy...
Anyway, the best hero to start is the one YOU feel most comfortable with... And definitely if you want to stop going range and start melee, then Abaddon is your guy...

Roam the hero section up there and research on the hero.

Or try trials.

You know, practice makes PeRfEcT!

Try Troll Warlord. Once you get the hang of being ranged, you can switch to melee. That way, you can decide whether you prefer melee or ranged heroes. There are many resources availiable to you through this site so just look around, ask questions, PM a mod/st, and look through guides.

This link should help you:

Good luck and have a good time Smile

Don't choose Pudge and Priestess of the Moon as your first hero. You'll have a VERY Hard time using them.

For your starting heroes , I'd prefer:

Lich and Zeus and Maybe Lina For Int Types If you like Int Types
Troll Warlord , Clinkz Eastwood (yes its his new funny name) and maybe Morphling if you can understand him if you like Agi Types
Abaddon , King Leoric , maybe even Balanar , ONLY IF YOU CAN HANDLE HIM! others such as Tiny , Rexxar and Tidehunter can be used ONLY IF YOU CAN HANDLE THEM! STR HEROES ARE HARD TO HANDLE.

p.s. go read the links they gave you

Try melee heroes once in a while, just so you get a hang of being harassed and having a hard time farming for gold and exp. This way you'd be able to find ways to get over this obstacle early on and be better. Always remember the basics, e.g. last-hit, deny, etc . .look it up in the "search forum".

and above all, . .keep practicing, if you love playing the game you'll give in effort to be better at Dota . .

Better have a hero choice of yours and try to practice on an AI map...

That might help...
