Kirovs are slow and can be stopped by lots of flak trucks and SMVs. However, fully promoted, they are almost undefeatable. Apocalypse...no comment, It can easily tank out even the full blast of a Nuclear missle and the radiation.
I like to use the Tekka Warriors from the Chronosphere (been playing too much DotA) Chronostorm expansion set. Just 1 can destroy an entire base.

*remembers the Tech Oil Derricks*
I remember when I would send my engineers to every single Tech Oil Derrick possible.
With the money, I would buy Aircraft carriers. IMO these little bombers are the ones that can finish a game real soon. just 4 or 5 ships which carry 3 bombers each and you're good to go.
The flak and missles aren't much to them as they auto-repair and fly out again.

yeah, the economic expansion is a must, hahaha, Aircraft Carriers can't use their power without vision of the base, although you can use ctrl + click

Of course you don't send Kirovs on their own.. It's like massing carriers without escorts. It's just plain dumb. -_- Same goes for Apocalypses. Like massing Siege Tanks without escorts.

Grand Cannons FTW! BLAM, BLAM..no more attack force that was heading to your base.
I like to distract them by building a cannon within shooting range of their base. While they are occupied with destroying the cannon, I send in the fighter planes, the v3 rockets and the ground Infantry. Before all that happens I like to organise my forces into units and have them attack different places. ^^
