The Hunter and the Hunted

During a lightless, tempestuous night like no other; rain poured by the gallons, the winds achieved the speed of sound, lightning flashed across the sky like there was no tomorrow and at this rate, there might not be.

A gravely wounded figure slowly made its way across the muddy ground of a labyrinthine forest as it did all it could to fight against the ghastly conditions. Its hand was clasping his other arm which was bleeding from a wound which looked to be caused by the claws of a rather large, hostile creature. The injured figure was far too tall to be human, it was quite muscular, its skin was a unique blue-gray color with black ethnic tattoos, it had a blazing red mohawk, its eyes were colorless but had a feel of intensity about them, its ears were long and pointing upward, its teeth were like a shark’s and it had two tusks sticking out of its mouth, it had simple leather armbands to color of sand, it wore nothing more than a brown tribal loincloth now stained with blood and its spear was broken in half. This creature was one of the trolls, which usually traveled and hunted as a group however, this one was alone. This was the troll known as the Sacred Warrior.

Amidst the howling wind and murderous rainfall, it still heard the sound of a twig snapping some distance away. Its eyes lit up as it stopped treading through the forest altogether and just waited where he stood, ready to fight whatever comes for him. Trolls were known for their hunting senses as well as being incredibly resilient and powerful adversaries with or without weapons. It waited with incredible calmness despite the current conditions; any other would have panicked or would be dead by now.

At last, its hunter finally showed up as lightning flashed through the sky and highlighted the hunter’s features if only for a couple of seconds. The hunter had green skin and was far more muscular than the troll but shorter, he was similar to the troll in the way that it had two tusks sticking out of his mouth, his eyes were glaring with a lust for blood, he wore the fur of a white wolf over himself like it were some shamanic article of clothing which made him look like a wolf on two legs and to top it all off, he was equipped with large, blood-red claws which seemed to lust for blood as much as his eyes. This was an orc shaman, practitioners of arcane arts regarding nature in every essence of it but this one did not seem to possess such power over nature. There was only one creature such as this: the Bloodseeker.

They stood in front of each other, waiting for the other to make a move but neither of them budged an inch. The very air about them became so tense that you could cut it with a knife; the Sacred Warrior was at a clear disadvantage with his only weapon broken in half but at least what he had was the bladed half. The bloodseeker knew he had the advantage but the mere fact that his adversary was a troll, the Sacred Warrior no less, meant that the tables could turn on him at any moment, even if it was injured.

Lightning.

The Bloodseeker had disappeared in the flash of light as the troll just stood there waiting. He felt a sudden movement from behind him and immediately kicked as if it were instinct. The Bloodseeker was hit squarely in the head but rolled away upon making contact with the ground to prevent any further damage. His tunic was now covered in mud but at least he was safe for now.

As if things could not get any worse, the weather became even much more destructive. Lightning now struck nearby trees, the ground became far more slippery and muddy, the rivers of the forest were flooding, and the winds were taking away whatever was left of the small animals in the forest.

It was all they could do to fight against each other as well as the foul weather. The Bloodseeker knew that this had to end now or both of them would just die of the conditions. He showed himself to the Sacred Warrior as lightning destroyed the tree he was hiding behind and readied himself.

The Bloodseeker moved right in front of the Sacred Warrior and slashed the troll’s face. The attack happened so quickly that it did not have time to block. His claws, now bloodied, suddenly looked like murderous weapons that could very well cut out someone’s heart. But the troll did not flinch. Instead, he immediately countered with a powerfully forceful kick that knocked the Bloodseeker back a few feet.

The orc immediately stood up and lunged forth with his claws pointed outwards, catching the troll on the side of his body but once again, a quick counterattack met the orc in a form of another powerful kick to the face. He was now bruised and bleeding by the nose after three kicks of increasing power.

The orc once again stood up, his coat white once more from the rain. He chanted a single word and the Sacred Warrior stopped moving. It was not that he could not move but he did not want to move. He had faced this adversary before and he knew that when that one word was chanted, any movements you made would be fatal.

The Bloodseeker chanted another word and his eyes and claws burned red. He had unleashed his true power.

The Sacred Warrior too chanted a word and his wounds started to seal up. He learned some very powerful healing magic from one of his mentors and it has always been useful in the midst of a battle.

The orc attacked again and all the troll could do was to evade with the slightest movements but it seemed that every wound inflicted on him sealed up and healed very quickly.

All of their magic had run their course and now they were back to where they started. They both gave out thunderous war cries and were at each other’s throats once again. Blow after blow, they exchanged and as the battle went on, both got faster as well as more powerful. These creatures were made for battle.

Lightning.

An ear-splitting shriek of pain cut through the noise of the night as one of the combatants had finally fallen. The Sacred Warrior stood over the Bloodseeker victoriously with his adversary impaled through the heart with half a burning spear whose fires could not be put out by the rain. However, the Sacred Warrior did not leave unharmed; its face was scarred by a deep cut, its body was covered in claw wounds and he was just flat out exhausted. But it was finally over. After years of hunting and being hunted down, a victor had finally emerged.

QFT - Quoted For Truth

Yeah, it did feel a little awkward at first but I guess it turned out alright.

i liked the way that you didn't use any dialogues for the story. it had the effect of a serious, short-lived battle, which is an effective technique of short stories. Also it adds a more darkness to the already dark setting, which is a good atmosphere to the event that is happening.

Very nice Smile

I prefer this short story to your previous works, the length gives you reason to pay closer attention to description and depth. Would love to see more of these short stories around.
