suggestions and opinions on a Fan Fic Competition

GUIDELINES:

-pending name

-has a theme that always changes for each competition, will be NON-dota related

-minimum of 500 words, no chapters please. if at all you have to, then do it in the same post and at the same time

-based on days and not months

-prizes will be sigs and gold, scroll down to view

-max entry count per contest: 8. if there are not enough participants, the due date will be extended.

-red, blue, AND gold members get auto-judging powers



JUDGING SYSTEM:

-Closeness to theme (15)
-Depth of character/plotline (15)
-Actual plot (10)
-Personal opinion and entertainment value, ie, whether you as a reader find it good enough to recommend others to read it too (10)
-Grammar/Spelling/Vocab (5)
-Creativity/Uniqueness/ Unique Selling Point (10)
-Use of language, rhetorical/stylistic devices, and portrayal ,ie, usage of allusion, diction, imagery, syntax, figurative language, parallelism, tone, accents, idioms, etc) (5)

70 point total. We will eliminate the highest score (besides anything above 10) and the lowest score and add the other four up. The highest score is the winner. Rewards go to the top 3. Only the first place winner gets a sig or avatar.

after the judges eliminate the entries to the top 4, the readers can vote for the winner in a poll.



CORE JUDGES:

-me
-tesca
-crash and burn
-dare
-shisehise
-varun
-timbangers
-keybi
-maginx
-rocky5694
-??? (any red, blue, gold, and honorary members will be given voting powers)
-winner of the previous contest can choose to become an honorary judge for the next contest or just participate again



Spoils of War:

Userbar + Avatar + gold = 1st place
Userbar + gold = 2nd place
Userbar + gold = 3rd place

gold scales from 3000 - 2000 - 1000

-Should have a set theme
-IMHO it would be better if the theme is not dota-related
-Should have some sort of word limit, but not nececary....
-It should be monthly(IMO)
-There should be a judging process, through categories(style, deapth,...), each with a certain number of points to it. Not a poll.

Thos are my suggestions. I look forward to a competition, since there was none for a long while.

Grammar! It's "depth", and not "deapth"

[EDIT]: Can I apply to be one of the judges? I like judging... Besides, I do have a good literary background. Your choice mods. *shrugs*

It was a typo....I know its depth. And thats not an issue of grammar anyway. Its spelling

But, IMHO, grammar is not so important...many great fan-fics on DS have grammar errors, but I still enjoyed them. The grammar did not affect their awesomness.

Yes, but it's painful to read a Fan-Fic which is grammatically incorrect, so I suggest that a few points should be allotted for correct usage of grammar.

and yes, we need judges besides me! it should be noted however that judges cant participate in the contests UNLESS they want to give up their voting powers for that one competition they participate in. if ur fine with that, u can become a judge Crash and Burn

It should definitely be advertised. Request peopleto put a link to the fanfic competition on their sigs. If possible, an announcement can be made.
Also, get some good judges. Select only those who have good fanfics here, or who's english is decent enough to write a review.
Set a limit of around 9-10 fanfics, too many will be too much work and it will also make voting and judging harder.
Lastly, offer some good rewards. They motivate more people to write, and also try harder to win.

Reward....dont make it DS gold....lets say, the one who wins, gets the status of ninja (the one flodian and some others have...)

IMO having a word limit is good. That way everyone has a fair chance.
I'm against judging being done via PM though. Doesn't make sense at all, how is judging giving away spoilers? Simply judge after all the stories have been submitted..

Edit: You think setting some requirements for being a judge is a good idea?

well it would be nice if the judges knew a bit about english and composition

and btw, how many judges should we have? 5? maybe more? 7?

and how the judging will be done can always be changed so yeah, thats not much of an issue for now ^^
