Darn this is the 3rd time I won a fan-fic competition but only have DS gold to show for it!

Having just one entry means that the author will be the winner by default, thereby removing the very essence of a competition.

based on personal experience, I actually feel empty inside when I win simply because I'm the only one who entered.
