[Mapmakers Lounge]

Posted: Tue Sep 29, 2009 2:41 pm

Hi all mapmakers out there, I was thinking of starting this thread since I have seen no other. I really hope that there are some people that do make their maps on dotastrategy and that they reply here.

So if you are currently working on a project or have finished a project you can use this thread to discuss it with other mapmakers.

If you want people to test your it would be good if you had one main thread for your map and then give me your link to that thread so I can post it in the main post. All that want can test the maps, no need to be a mapmaker for that.

I myself have some maps that I need some help with testing (and i have already recieved some) and I used this site. Got some great tips. I will post the link to my main thread for my maps as an example.

Maps For Testing:
SwedishChef
-Custom Hero Arena Defense
-Pontus Tag NEW

DaMan2000
-Fun Map

I made maps, but they are just for fun. I don't think they will be good enough to be official or anything.

Ok VSG, here's one map I made. I took a ladder map and editted the terrain a little. Made it 1v9. Basically pick a hero, rape the opponent while gaining gold so you can buy more heroes. There are items as well. I tried to make as balanced as I can but it was hard considering it was 1v9. Enjoy and gimme comments!

Just played against computer, I think its a good mix of WC3 style campaigns and hero control.. Loved the hero names: Darth Maul, Mr Disable etc Laughing

Heh, I actually had given up on this thread but today I saw that we had some posts xD. GREAT! I have added you link on the main thread. But how the hell do you insert a link on words? I you get what I want.

E: I found it, now click on the map name which you like to test.

MapMaker's lounge? OMG!
lol.

Anyways how do you all balance heroes and such when it comes to Hero-Arenas?
I find that I can't get a good balance even if it is amongst just 8heroes.
One ends up more IMBA than the others.
Any tips?

And I was thinking a AOS-map in the style of War of Emperium in Ragnarok Online..
If anyone gets what I mean =)

But the main thing is balancing.
I tried making a Map with that idea before, but I think I didn't save a back up before my PC crashed and I had to reformat it =/

I'll try and find it.
And I still want to know how u guys balance heroes.

Balancing is very hard and you really never balance a game. If you take dota as an example icefrog is still "balancing" there right?

For my custom hero map i used a system which works quite well. All heroes have the same amount of total start attributes divides on the three different. So f.ex. totally 20 start attribute hero 1: 8 agi, 6 strength 6 int. hero 2: 12 strength, 5 agi, 3 int.

Some goes for the attributes gained per level.

That system might not work well with heroes with fixed abilities. There I would just recommend constant testing along with some of the stuff i wrote above.

Hm, terrain is the things which carries me away the most on map. Always when I am just making a small change in description or something I end up editing the terrain :P. Just let your imagination flow. Here is a terrain thread: http://www.thehelper.net/forums/showthread.php?t=29221&highlight=terrain.

And here is a contest which had some nice submissions: http://www.thehelper.net/forums/showthread.php?t=136838.

This one is better: http://www.thehelper.net/forums/showthread.php?t=129347

A good tip is to first have a main theme and then play around with different heights. Then add some trees and other doodads or effects. Play around with the size of the models. Often you can make very cool effects by using ability effects in the terrain.

Just do something really messed up with the terrain height. Rise and lower close to each other and you get cool terrain. You have seen pontus tag, thats a result of that.

Remember a nice terrain can often save for some lack of action in the map.

It irritates me to spend 3-4 hours making terrain...I really don't have the nerves for it...

Yeah, thats why i really want you to take that editing tool. Use rise two, use it on some random spots close to each other. Then use lower tool and lower random spots on that. Use the land riser make a hill. Crush that hill with the water tool and you get something like a waterfilled crater (seen in pontus tag).

I don't know what else to say. Just play around.

E: gotta sleep now, btw there are lots of threads were you can get someone else to make the terrain for you. I can also do it if I have some time.
