yes the portal and allstars community arent friendly.they started playing played since the beginning of dota, so they feel they're superior and tend to ignore ideas from newbies. however the mods are actually friendly and give you pro advices and answers. also you can find loads of information in those sites, especially the mechanics section of allstars.

what makes ds different is that the people here arent that addicted to dota, so we talk about other stuff as well. too much dota is boring.

i first was into dotaportal until i found this site, that site is much much worse than DS, also more laggy...
