What to get as a starting item

i think bots wouldnt be useless as a starting item for barathrum, sience you get more dammage from it.

My starting build is either 2 gauntlets/wraiths/mantles, 9 tangoes, 2 salves, 1 clarity (random)
or 2 gauntlets/wraiths/mantles, 2 circlets and 6 tangoes(random)
And I always random.

Personally, almost every game i start with either crow + tangos + claritys if picked, else if random'd then chick and bottle, or even in some cases when i pick i.e. mirana, i go for chick, and rush bottle then bird, or bird then bottle, depending on my farming.

For me, my crow is my favorite 'item' in the game. I constantly use it for rune checking/rune stealing(crows can take runes), and even use it for sight gain in chasing heros. But only done crow chasing recently, due to the fact that it's taken me a long time to get good enough to have enough micro to be chasing with both hero and crow, and for both get away alive after the kill.

Dota is always a different build, and a different tactic every game. If not, then you either have a very successful build+item order, or pub bash too much , go in-house more

Well, another hero I want to add is a hero like Rhasta, Rylai...
They should get boots at the beginning no matter what, especially if their position is to assist their teammate in the lane.

As for a certain hero who doesn't have a skill to do last hit and harrass hero, especially strength type, getting
1 stout shield + tangoes can also help a lot

Techies can get shoes but only for 1st blood, and I don't think that is the smart choice. Improve your mana pool, farm more, harrass more. When they plan to kill you, suicide and kill them. Get a hero to go with as you protect him and harrass enemies, coz techies got a range of 625 which the creep wouldn't hit you (I think his attack animation also consider as non-attracting creep type)

Hmmm, i have seen a lot of bottle-crow builds as their starting item nowadays... To the point where almost every lane has a bottle-crow... Whoooo...

Its extremely good if your laning in mid, where the "rune wars" take place... It gives you more lane control, even in -np modes, you can constantly courier your bottle to have fountain 'refills'...

But in really competitive matches, its much better to have branches, circlets, tangoes, clarities etc... You can have a shared courier for your team, but against organized teams, you're better off boosting your stats and having a nice regen item for a good laning period... Buy wards to have some rune and map control...

Ooh its from 2007 ok.
I was going to point out that you start out with 603 gold now.
Its enough for:
Boots+Tangoes
Basil+Tangoes
603 is very useful.

MMh i have to say that ES can be another 1 with boots early game. In pub, u will fissure them blocking them to ure creep wave. I usually get an early game kill, if not 2 or 3. But as I said, it works just in pub, with not so good enemies.

3ironwud+t2ango+ring of reg is my fav early item for all heroes. if tango runs out i shop at gobln shop for 1 more ring reg..

it's fun to buy scroll of town portal, 2 or 3 clarity potion and some tango or branch. then port to shop in forest plant 3 or 4 mines before creeps arrive. you usualy get first blood. you can use suiceide for 2nd 3rd .. n-th kill.

Bottle is a great starting item for those who need to start ganking right off the bat. Otherwise, it is better to just go with tangoes and branchers, etc. Bottle should only be used if you plan on spamming, rune jacking (which you should be doing), and roaming. If you don't do any of those while you have bottle, you are not using it to it's fullest potential!
