most avatars are either altered layerings of sprites or text or artist work drawn by some1 with too much time on their hands

Paint is NOT even an alternative. Even if you cannot afford Adobe Photoshop. You should at least get Gimp.

I use Photoshop CS2 to make my avatar. Although I've already got CS3 running =D
