The Evil Greater Than The Lich King - II
Posted: Tue Nov 13, 2007 8:37 amOK, this is the continuation of my first story, The Evil Greater Than The Lich King. I strongly recommend that you read my first story before you start on this. So here it goes:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter One: The Quest
-------------------------------------------------------------
Ezalor had summoned a meeting of the army chiefs and generals of the Sentinels to discuss their future plans to stop the invading scourge army. Ezalor led the Sentinel in battle now that Furion had passed away.
“We lost our finest leader in the last battle against evil but we must not let that deter us from our chosen route.” said Ezalor.
Suddenly, an elven messenger came into the room and bowing before the council assembled there, he said, “We have uncovered a prophecy of sorts but we were unable to decipher the writing. Perhaps you could, my lord.” Handing out a scroll of parchment, he stepped forward. Ezalor opened the scroll and read the writing. His eyebrows narrowed
and then sighing, he said, “This scroll has been written in the most ancient tongue of our land, it has been written but none other than Cenarious himself. It says that a certain relic on the island of Edna to the south of Lordaeron, when held by the Lich King, shall give him a physical from and with it powers untold.”
He gave the scroll back and then rose from his throne. In a deep voice, he said, “We shall have to see to it that we get our hands on this relic before the Lich King does, otherwise..”
Rikimaru rose and said that he was willing to go to the island of Edna to retrieve the relic. Azwraith also agreed to travel with Rikimaru to the island. Ezalor consented and chartered a fine ship for them to travel in.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Two: Roshan again...
-------------------------------------------------------------
Rikimaru and Azwraith setr out on their journey the next day carrying nothing for their supplies had already been loaded on the deck. While walking, Azwraith asked about what had happened during their battle with the Great Evils. Rikimaru described it in earnest culminating by saying what the Evils had said,"We have the souls of all the people who died in the recent past with us and they shall be released for with our subduing, we are too weak to hold them for much longer and your fallen comrades shall be revived except for furion for he chose for his soul to dississipate into nature itself.
Azwraith already knew of this for he had been one of those revived. "Also, Rikimaru complicates things.",he thought.
They had travelled a great distance already and now, only one obstacle lay between them and they just had to pass through Roshan's lair to get to the docks. Anyway, Roshan had been killed by the Scourge or so they thought..
Roshan's lair was empty and they were nearly through it when, suddenly, in front of them, a ball of energy formed and exploded enveloping them in alternating darkness and light and when they got their vision back, Roshan, stronger and bigger than ever before stood before them.
A weaker Roshan had taken many of the Scourge to defeat and still had lost one of their comrades but now, only two faced Roshan, a bigger and stronger one...
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Three: The Meeting
-------------------------------------------------------------
As Azwraith and Rikimaru stood in front of the towering Roshan, Azwraith received a mental summons from the Lich King. Azwraith immediately juxtaposed creating a image and simultaneously walked into the shadows and ran to his east where a portal created by the Lich King awaited him.
Rikimaru thought Azwraith was still there and told him, “Lets charge at him.” Azwraith nodded at him. Rikimaru, melding with the shadows charged at Roshan while Azwraith ran near and ducking Roshan blundering hand, he threw a spear with great velocity at Roshan. Since it was only an image, the spear dissociated on touching him but Rikimaru was not to know that. Rikimaru climbed up Roshan’s back and removing a bomb from inside his clothing, threw it down at Roshan. A blue smoke enveloped Roshan blinding him and suffocating him.
Azwraith entered the portal and was immediately teleported to the Lich King. The Lich King arose from his throne and walked down to Azwraith. He towered over Azwraith and then, Azwraith knew that his previous mission had been a success.
Azwraith’s image saw the opportunity and sneaked behind Roshan where he waited for Rikimaru to take care of Roshan or die in the try. Little did Rikimaru realize that Azwraith had deserted him due to all the smoke and continued hacking away at the confused Roshan. Then, the smoke cleared and Rikimaru looked down to see how Azwraith was doing. He saw Azwraith at Roshan’s foot piercing him with his javelin. What had happened was that Azwraith’s image had conjured up an image before retiring. In fact, it had retired for that very reason fro he didn’t want Rikimaru seeing his newly gained power battling Strygwyr. Rikimaru first broke one of Roshan’s stone eyes and while he was thus blinded and in pain he jumped up and dived at Roshan’s head with his scythe pointing down. Suddenly, Roshan punched at the air above fro his other eye had seen Rikimaru diving towards him. Rikimaru plummeted down towards Roshan’s towering hand towards a certain death.
Azwraith looked at Kel’Thuzad who had been possessed by the Lich King. This had been done with the help of the Evils. Azwraith’s task had been to stop the Evil’s only servant, and an extremely strong one at that, Strygwyr, from helping the Evils battle the combined powers of the Scourge and the Sentinels fro that would have meant failure. Azwraith informed the Lich King about the relic and then departed through the portal.
Rikimaru’s life was at stake and now that the Lich King was stronger then ever before, were the Sentinel doomed?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Four: The Ambush
-------------------------------------------------------------
Azwraith stepped through the portal and ran towards Roshan hoping Rikimaru hadn’t noticed his absence. As he neared Roshan, he saw Rikimaru plummeting towards Roshan’s rock hard hand, plummeting towards his doom. This simplified things. Azwraith could easily take care of Roshan after Rikimaru was killed and proceed on his journey unhindered. This would have been the easiest choice.
Yet, Azwraith was hesitant. He had grown fond of Rikimaru and couldn’t just let him die. His mind had decided and his body obeyed. He ran forwards and taking aim, threw his javelin at Roshan’s undamaged eye. Roshan shrieked and covering his other eyes fell backwards while Rikimaru managed to hit Roshan in his stomach as he descended and landed catlike on his feet. Azwraith had reached Rikimaru by now and supported him in getting up. Rikimaru had noticed the direction of the spear and asked Azwraith as to where he had been. Azwraith decided to tell Rikimaru the truth. While they talked, Roshan lay behind in a faint. Rikimaru heard Azwraith’s tale with surprise.
It took a while for Azwraith to finish his tale after which they continued on their journey after a bath in a pool nearby to revive them. Roshan was not killed. He was far too strong for them to achieve that. But, instead, they had merely knocked him out, an extraordinary feat in itself. They soon reached the docks and boarding their ship, they left for the island. The bond between Rikimaru and Azwraith grew with every passing moment in each others company. Azwraith had finally found someone in whom he could confide his secrets; Rikimaru had found someone who liked him in spite of his differences. The ship left the docks and they went into their cabin when a dagger flew from a tree on the shore. A black dagger on which ran towards them a dark entity. The Sentinel Warriors sensed a fight coming up when Rikimaru fell to the ground with a poison tipped dagger etched in his back. Out of the shadows stepped a warden, a tainted one at that. Azwraith had been cornered with Rikimaru weak and in no condition to fight Azwraith steadied his lance and duplicating himself, stepped into the shadows, invisible.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Five: Confrontations
-------------------------------------------------------------
Azwraith used his image to talk with his hunters. Azwraith asked through his image, “I am on the Lich King’s side. Why are you hunting me?” Azwraith had immediately recognized them as the Lich King’s two most faithful servants, Mercurial and Mortred.
Mortred replied,” We know of your little game, Azwraith and we are here to take care of you before you cause any real harm.”
“So, how did you find out?”
“A secret is not a secret if you share it with someone. We overheard you talking with Rikimaru.”
“Well, then sadly, the Lich King is about to lose two of his servants, I guess.”
“Forget it, you take us two on?” sneered Mercurial in a hoarse voice that suggested she was not of the physical plane..
Mortred ran forward and slashed at Azwraith’s image. It flickered and then disappeared.
Mortred snarled in frustration and then looked around for the real Azwraith. Azwraith had by this time climbed on to the roof of the ship and stood there witnessing the drama below. He conjured up image after image and sent them rushing in on Spectre and Mortred and each and every time, the images disappeared before they reached the two. Mortred ran around the deck of the ship and Azwraith followed her. Mortred stopped and smelling the air threw a dagger at where Azwraith would have been had he not jumped. He had looked into the cockpit and found the captain and other crew members dead. It was all upto him now. He took a deep breath and jumped in the air and somersaulting landed behind Mortred breaking his invisibility by slashing at Mortred’s back. Mortred shrieked in pain as she fell to the ground. Azwraith wiped his lance of the blood and ran around to meet Spectre. She had heard Mortred and understood what had happened. She was ready and as soon as Azwraith came, she threw her spectral dagger at Azwraith. Azwraith blocked it with his lance and threw his lance like a javelin at Spectre. She sidestepped and catching the lance, threw it back at Azwraith and followed it up with another dagger.
Azwraith pulled a lance from behind and swapped aside the flying lance and simultaneously he walked back into the astral plane becoming invisible to the naked eye while leaving an image behind. The dagger hit the image and disappeared. Azwraith was exhausted but he had to have revenge for Rikimaru. He jumped up and flew down with his lance in free fall on Spectre. She saw it coming and stepped back, looking up. Azwraith landed and used his momentum to spin around the pierced lance, lashing out with his legs at Mercurial. She was knocked back and Azwraith, plucking his lance out of the ground threw it at Mercurial. Mercurial saw the lance coming but, lying on the floor, she could do nothing to avoid it. The lance pierced the ground. Mercurial had disappeared into the astral realm as soon as the lance struck her. Azwraith knew she wouldn’t be coming back till he finished his duty and once he finished his duty, there would be no reason for her to come back.
Azwraith turned his attention towards Rikimaru.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Six: The Troll
-------------------------------------------------------------
Azwraith walked towards Rikimaru and picked up his frail body in his hands and jumped out of the ship onto dry land. Suddenly, a troll walked up to Azwraith and flashing his burning spear, pointed at Rikimaru. Azwraith placed Rikimaru on the floor and spoke animatedly with his hands signaling fast. The troll seemed to understand and pointing at Rikimaru removed a salve.
Whatever it was, a look of delight spread over Azwraith’s face. He stepped back. The troll bent over Rikimaru and opened his mouth. He then poured the contents of his potion into the gaping mouth. Rikimaru’s eyes opened slowly and slowly got up.
“This is the troll, Huskar. He is a fighter, a brave one at that but he is the last of his clan. He is also, partly, a medic and that’s how he healed you.”
Facing the troll, Rikimaru uttered a deep, ‘Thank You.’ The troll obliged and inserting his spear behind his back in a sheath of some kind, he bowed. Azwraith once again conversed with the troll in their language and Azwraith watched in awe replaying the current events in his brain. The troll nodded and then Azwraith signaled for Rikimaru to follow. Along with Rikimaru, the troll also came.
Azwraith explained that Huskar wanted revenge on the scourge and since they are what we fight, he gladly obliged to follow us. They went into the ship and then, leaning on a well, Azwriath fell off to sleep, his exhaustion overcoming his determination.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Seven:The Mock Battle
-------------------------------------------------------------
The troll picked up Azwraith and lay him on a comfortable bed inside the ship. Rikimaru was heading the ship to its final destination, the island Edna. A big map on the wall besides the wheel gave him directions. Huskar busied himself with making some more salves and Rikimaru knew that communicating with the troll would be a fruitless venture.
Azwraith woke up as they neared the end of their journey and all of them a hearty meal from what they scavenged of the ship’s lockers. Azwraith, on waking up, decided to spend time on teaching Huskar English. Huskar seemed a ready learner and had mastered the basic words of English before they landed.
Then, Rikimaru had a go at Huskar. Rikimaru unsheathed the blade he called ‘The Butterfly” and spun it around in the air and then charged at Huskar. Huskar did not seem interested in dodging; instead, he blocked the blow with his burning spears and threw one at Rikimaru. He dodged it with ease and melding into the shadows, backstabbed at Huskar. But, if Rikimaru had imagined that the blow would severely maim Huskar, he was wrong. Huskar only seemed to grow faster and stronger with every blow he received. And with every blow Rikimaru received, he slowed down, dangerously so. And finally, in desperation, Rikimaru unleashed his final weapon. Sheathing The Butterfly, he removed an axe, the color of the sky. Using it, he created images of himself and then unsheathed his Butterfly again.
Huskar was momentarily confused and stood still for a second or two. Seeing an opening, Rikimaru exploited this tiny mistake of Huskar and charged at him with his images. The first image dealt Huskar a weak blow in his chest which he shrugged of but the second image also hit him in the same place with a tad bit more force. Then, Rikimaru hit the same spot once again and dealt the final blow to Huskar. Huskar fell back, a defeated troll. Rikimaru fell to the floor, exhausted and his images disappeared.
Azwraith picked up one of Huskar’s salves and fed it to Huskar. Huskar regained consciousness at once. Rikimaru also used one of Huskar’s salves.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Eight:An Unwelcome Welcome
-------------------------------------------------------------
The ship hit the bank with a thud. The currents had been too strong and the trio had not managed to keep control of the ship. Luckily, they had landed on the island of Edna. The three were revitalized and rearing for a fight. What they did not expect was an army the size of a small legion of the Sentinel. But that is what happened.
The island looked peaceful from the ship with minimal activity. But, as soon as the three landed, the land became abound with activity. Ghouls seemingly rose from the ground. Abominations seemed to be created from thin air and both these sections numbered in the hundreds and what was more terrifying was that these sections seemed to be headed a frightening leader who seemed to radiate power.
Rikimaru swore and readied himself for combat. Azwraith looked steady and calm but there was a whirlwind of activity going on his brain. A smile spread over Huskar’s face as he awaited the combat that would be. The army charged. Refusing to be trapped between the ship and the army, they split (an unwise decision as it might be, there was no other alternative) and headed in three different directions, all away from the ship. The army also split.
The Phantom Lancer, true to his name created scores of images which disappeared at an alarmingly fast rate but once in a while, as an image disappeared, it would take a ghoul or abomination down with it. But, Azwraith was desperate for the Scourge just seemed to close in on him determined to extinguish his breath. Rikimaru was having n easier time for when he disappeared as fast as he struck and the minions of Evil could only take a defensive stance but it would not last forever for hiding in the shadows cost a great deal of spiritual energy to Rikimaru and he would have to take as many of the monsters he could before his spiritual energy was extinguishes.
Huskar meanwhile was susceptible to the attacks of the opposing army but as before, he only seemed to grow in strength from his wounds. He was also, seemingly, regenerating his life force at an alarmingly fast rate and the monsters around him fell at the same pace as his life force regenerated. He was literally tearing through the flesh of these monsters.
But, even as the army fell, more ghouls and abominations and other unnamed and unidentified creatures rose from the ground.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Nine: The Nether Drake
-------------------------------------------------------------
As the sturdy warriors fought a doomed battle, two figures rose above the corpses of the evil fiends. They seemed to drain the energy from the zombies and abominations and at last, there came a point when the scourge army was destroyed but with it, the two figures had finished their evolution. A massive Abomination and a large Ghoul stood side by side.
As the heroes watched in horror, the Abomination threw a hook at Azwraith and the hook tore into his flesh and entangled itself near his heart. Taken by surprise, there was no resistance and the Abomination pulled with great force. Azwraith was dragged through the ground, the first to come to his senses was Huskar and seeking to break the links in the chain, he threw a burning spear towards the hook. It did not cut through the hook but instead entangled itself in the links of the hook, effectively stopping its movement. Azwraith quickly unengaged himself and lay on the ground gasping for air.
Suddenly, a third figure rose, this time around it was a nether drake. The evil dragons, people called them. They were evil but also fiendishly strong. Azwraith had encountered this creature only once before and then, he had had to run away from it with barely any life force left in him. No wonder it was the Lich King’s pet. Azwraith felt his courage flow out of his wound with the blood that flowed out of it. The other two had, of course, no idea of whom or what they were facing.
Huskar ran towards Azwraith and healed his injuries but now, he had run out of salves. Rikimaru wasn’t hurt much, only a scratch or two but he would find it difficult to meld with the shadows.
The Nether Drake spoke, “We are here not to fight but to make an allianccccce with you, an alliancccce that I hope will benefit ussssss both.”
Rikimaru spoke with venom in his words,” Ha!! Not here to fight you say. Agreed you saved us from those minions of the Lich King but your Abomination nearly tore apart Azwraith’s heart. Not here to fight…”
The Nether Drake hissed,” Pudge, thisss abomination here, wassss hungry. He couldn’t resssissst eating Azwraith. Anyway, if you agree to this allianccccce, we can work towardssss defeating the Lich King oncccce and for all.”
Huskar and Rikimaru looked towards Azwraith for an answer. He looked towards them and accepted for he was afraid and fear makes one do things they wish they could undo..
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Ten: The Naga's Arrival
-------------------------------------------------------------
The Nether Drake introduced himself.” I am Viper, a private pet of the Lich King. This abomination here wassss made by the highesssst order of necromanccccers, he issss known by the name of Pudge. Thissss ghoul is a mutant; he evolved far fassssster then othersssss of his kind. He wasss named Naix.”
Azwraith nodded and said,” Azwraith, my name is Azwraith.” Pointing at Rikimaru, he said,” Rikimaru. Then, pointing at Huskar, he said,” Huskar.”
Viper nodded. Then he said,” You were attacked by the Lich King’s army, that could only mean he knowssss of your coming, of the prophecccy.”
Only Azwraith and Rikimaru knew as to how the Lich King knew. Huskar and Viper looked puzzled. Pudge and Naix did not show any emotion. They were of their kind, similar to them in all aspects. Only, they were stronger.
Azwraith said,” The relic is near. We should find it as soon as we can and get away before the Lich King comes in person.”
Viper said,” The relic you ssspeak about. What isss it?”
Azwraith replied, “A sword named The Divine Rapier, supposedly created by God himself. A weapon of immense power that will win the Sentinel the war. “
Viper hissed,” I know of it. I ssshall take you to itsss location. Follow me.”
It was a short walk and they soon reached the relic. It was beautiful and power emanated from it spontaneously. Gilded in gold, it shone with the brilliance of a thousand diamonds. Just as they had expected. What they had not expected, neither wanted, was the entire army of the Lich King with the Lich king in the body of Kel’Thuzad. The Divine Rapier lay between the two factions. Rikimaru could read an inscription on the pedestal on which the Rapier lay:
“Only one tainted by evil, true evil, can wield this sword. And to use it to its full potential, its wielder must feed it the blood of his foe.”
Rikimaru whispered,” It isn’t a weapon of God; it is a weapon of the Satan himself!”
Azwraith nodded. The two factions stood facing each other, the smaller grim while the larger was exuberant. Their goal was nearly complete.
Suddenly, a shrill cry came from Azwraith’s right. As everyone turned around, they saw a force of Nagas led by Slithice slithering towards them, their halberds and other weapons held in combat position.
Azwraith and Rikimaru were overjoyed. At last, help had arrived. Even though it wouldn’t stem the tides of undead, it would give them some precious time.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Eleven: The Traitor
-------------------------------------------------------------
Huskar and Azwraith decided to lay low for now. Rikimaru meanwhile went invisible and whispered into Azwraith’s ear. Azwraith nodded and he also became invisible while making a replica of himself. The replica whispered to Huskar the plan.
The Nagas had already engaged the undead but their numbers were fast dwindling and there wasn’t much time left. Azwraith moved towards the pedestal but suddenly Gondar arrived in front of him and slashed at Azwraith rendering him visible. At the same time a shot fired from a hill behind them and as everyone turned around, they saw that the Sentinel had arrived.
Gondar spoke,” Azwraith, you are now going down. The Rapier belongs to the Lich King and it shall be me who delivers it to him.
Azwraith quickly considered the situation and understood. Understood that the traitor was Gondar, the one who had betrayed them. Furion had suspected it and now, it was confirmed.
“I should have known. The lowly bounty hunter that you are. Furion suspected and like everything else he knew, it was true.”
“Hmmph. That old bitch of a prophet. He got what he deserved.”
Rikimaru and Huskar were already with the Sentinel rushing towards the hordes of undead. The Nagas fought with renewed courage and energy. A sneer formed on the possessed Kel’Thuzad’s face. The fight was getting more interesting.
Suddenly a stray arrow hit Gondar in the back and he crumpled but true to the Lich King, he dragged himself till the pedestal and pulled out his sword.
Azwraith smiled and then threw his lance at Gondar and Gondar’s very life force drained out of him. Azwraith then plucked the Rapier from Gondar’s hands and walked forward to the Lich King. It was as if time had frozen. All fighting had stopped and the ground was littered with bodies. All eyes were focused on the drama happening between the Lich King and Azwraith.
Many thoughts passed through Rikimaru's head. Azwraith was not following the plan. Had he really changed sides now;tainted by the Lich King's magic??
-------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Twelve: The Finale
-------------------------------------------------------------
Knelling down, Azwraith had his hands outstretched and Divine Rapier was taken by Kel’Thuzad. Suddenly, both the Rapier and Azwraith disappeared in a poof! The Sentinel who were already anxious saw each others face wrinkled with anxiety, looking as if a bomb was about to blow and there was no way to defuse it. The undead, which had already begun rejoicing quitened and a hush, fell over the battle field. Meanwhile, the Lich King was surprised and turned around.
Suddenly, Azwraith materialized behind the Lich King and struck him with the Divine Rapier. Kel’Thuzad’s body was split in half as the spirit of the Lich King rose from within the body. Rikimaru instantaneously pieced everything together. The dead body of Gondar. The Divine Rapier and Azwraith disappearing. Rikimaru had killed Gondar and was thus tainted by killing a minion of the Lich King in cold blood and thus had been allowed to pick up the Rapier. And realization came with joy. Joy that Azwraith had not betrayed them. But as everyone watched, the undead in horror, the Sentinel and Nagas in astonishment, the spirit of the Lich King dived towards Necrolyte, another of his trusted servants. Azwraith could do nothing for he had fallen to the ground in exhaustion, relieved that the Sentinel were safe…apparently. The Lich King was moments away from the horrified Necrolyte when a green light surrounded him and protected him from the Lich King. The light pierced through the spirit and slowly, the spirit dispersed. Furion had saved the Lich King yet again.
As the Lich King disappeared, so did his army. The Sentinel finally rejoiced and Azwraith was hailed as their hero. Rikimaru explained everything to the Sentinel Leaders as Azwraith slept through the journey. It was a happy moment for the Sentinel…little did they realize that for may, this was going to be their last day of free will.
