Keep this word in mind when buying items for a hero: Synergy.

Does the hero have enough attackspeed to trigger this ability?
Does the hero have skills that go well with this item?
Will the hero benefit with this item?
Are there any items that are more effective on a particualr hero than other items?

Those are just some of the questions you should ask yourself before buying an item.

whenever you buy items, check these:
-can i afford it?
-will i have a combo for it?
-do i have the mana to use active skill?
-will my friends benefit?

Items can only be combined if they are recipe items [new shop, level 1-4 shops].

To combine them, you must collect the "ingredients" first.

If you already did, then buy the recipe scroll.

Some items don't need recipe scrolls and are combined instantly.

Farming = to kill creeps for money, either neutral or not.

Though I've already played DotA for quite some time, I still don't get the early, middle and late game stff. How are these periods limited and are they actually periods? Are they refering to towers or something (if a certain level tower has been reached)?

early, mid, late game breakdown

Posted: Thu Jan 25, 2007 11:04 pm

@ Daelin - Early, mid and late game are never rigidly defined, but its just a basic sense of the flow of the game that you'll pick up after a while. Early game is when everyone is still just trying to farm and keep out of trouble. A tower might take a couple of whacks if the hero on D in that lane is getting beat back. Regular players are buying cheap stat enhancers (null talismans, bracers, wraith bands) etc because you dont have money, and saving up for your first couple of bomb items.
Mid game is where aggressive tower pushing starts, and people who farmed in the first couple levels start buying their first good items. You'll see people with a Sange and Yasha at this point saving to combine them, if they dont have it already(just an example) and going for other items. To me, mid game begins after level 7/8 because people usually have their ultimates and enough stats/strength/items/whatever to do a prelim attack, followed by regular attacks and an ultimate, depending on your character. Before this you werent really a threat. Now youre a little harder and are able to do more with your abilities.
Late game is when people are able to( even if they didnt) max their ultimates and afford the serious items like the buriza and skadi and stuff. At this point the lane towers are either down or can easily be taken in two tries from the tower pusher heroes. Thats it in a nutshell, from my point of view. Theres lots of things that can be expanded, but thats the basics. Smile

for newbs... pls practice holding the ALT button down, perpetually, but release it when pressing the shortcut key or a spell... this take some time to master but once you do it over and over again, you'll do it by rote, subconsciously. This is super ultra mega useful for last hits on farming and denying. (and also to last hit that hero being ganked by ur team with ur dagon 5^^).

Also, there's such a thing as, being "mini-map conscious". you train urself to always ne aware of what is happening in the mini-map. furthermore, if u see ur minimap, and heroes are represented by diffrent colors, press alt + a, so, u know that "reds" mean the enemy, and "greens" (or teal, not really sure) mean friends. another thing, the ! signal shortcut key is alt + g, but click spamming on the mini map, wud confuse ur allies, it will blot out the immediate area, in the mini map.just click a couple of times and type ur instruction/plea.

In addition, theres another thing called "auto-cancel". after a hero attacks, or casts a spell, there is an animation lapse before the hero will make his next auto-move,that is, after the damage i.e. animation (casting time, attack animation, spell animation), then the actual damage, then the residual animation. The animation after is useless.(try casting nova with lich <or rylai> without cancelling, and hell turn stupid for a split second. you cancel the animation after by immediately executing a move after the damage phase. Hence, for a range hero, the moment the "missile" leaves the character, you right click immediately to cancel out the animation. OR, after u cast nove with Lich, the moment the nove explodes, you right-click immediately to cancel the aniamtion. Capisce? ^^ Thus us very useful when ur range and ur "bullying" melees. I.e. FOr lich, nova, auto-cancel,attack,auto-cancel,attack... etc. ^^

Ill post some other useful tips for newbs later... Bleh!

You want a first blood kill? Choose a nuker. In a 4on4 or 3on3 game, buy your self an energy booster or arcane ring in 2on2 or 1on1. Wait till you get to level 4 or 5. use all your skills against your opponent. Having a large mana pool, you'll probably kill your opponent fast. trust me.

Yes,but you must also be awear of what your enemy has gat in his inventory... al level 5-6 some heros can have items like Lothar, and can escape your attack and all is worth nothing.
Also, try lowering his hp before the big moment, it will be even easier if he has got lower hp than normal.

P.S. with traxex try not to go for an early kill, wait until level 10-11 when you have good enough items in your inventory to know that if you can't kill him,he can't kill you.

I've been playing dota for about five months now but it wasn't until recently that I discovered the groove of things. I spent sometime wondering about the same things Vipul is thinking of. I'll lay down some basic rules.
All of the below are under the assumption of 5 v 5 -ar.

General Early Game Tips
1) When you get your hero type -ma and decide with your teammates if your heroes are compatible with each other. Some heroes are great at soloing but stink at team fights. If you get a handful of solo heroes you'll start feeling the pain when mid game (6-11) comes. You need heroes that can counter the opposing team. This first step decides how the rest of the game will flow and can decide if your team gets utterly crushed or not.

2) Decide what beginning items best suit your hero. Say you're Lina Inverse, I always go void first because I want to be able to nuke as much as possible. If you're a melee strength hero get a ring of regeneration and a bracer, maybe even a clarity potion if your skill cost is a bit hefty. I usually always get a ring of regeneration and a bracer of the corresponding stat type (Wraith-AGI, Bracer-STR, Null- INT.)

3) Pick the lane that best suits your hero. For example, if you're Chen you'll want bottom lane so you have free access to creeps to dominate. If you're Pudge you'll need middle lane to take advantage of the cliffs and your hook. If you're Sniper you can take just about any lane safely. Also try to match up the enemy hero you are against so you have the advantage (if you're ranged the best case scenario is to be against a melee agility hero.)

4) Stay in the most advantageous position for your hero in relation to the enemy hero. If you are a ranged hero you'll want to start harassing whenever they're within your range. If your range is +500 then you can sit right behind your creeps to keep the enemy melee hero away. Likewise, a melee hero should keep its distance from a ranged hero and only move in for denies and last hits. When a ranged nuker is against a ranged agility hero keep out of its ranged distance such that when it tries to harass you have enough time to react and cast a nuke.

5) Manage the creeps. Many beginners take this for granted. For the early to early middle game creep management is essential. Move in and get the last hit so you can get the gold because when it comes to gold only the last hit matters. Deny the enemy hero so they level slower. When your creeps are pushing the enemy tower after the second wave stand in the creeps way to block them and withdraw the line of battle out of the enemy towers range. Towers kill creep very fast and provide experience to the enemy hero, denying a tower is difficult. If you need to withdraw the line even faster attack your own creep when they're hp is low enough. Keep the enemy creep within your towers range but not so close that the enemy hero can hit the tower while your tower is focused on the creep.

Combat Based Tips

1) Read the enemy hero. If a nuker has low mp it is okay for a melee hero to move in on the creeps more often. If the hero has potions early game make them use them by harassing them. See what the enemy hero has equipped and see what they are making for items, inform your teammates of what you find out. A person pushing Dagon early game is usually very noteworthy. If you aren't familiar with the nature of a hero ask your teammates what you're up against; possible combos, whether they're likely to get/have stunning items/skills. All this will help you hold yourself properly against the enemy hero.

2) Keep an eye on the minimap, always. This omniscient little box is a gank detector. Tell your teammates if a hero with 70%-100% disappears as they are probably going to team-up against someone else. Heroes such as Clinkz, Warlock, Rhasta, and Zeus that can kill you within 10 seconds are noteworthy. A good early game Anub'arak (Nerubian Assassin) will kill a nuker in 3-5 seconds. Not everyone is always looking at they're minimap so keep good communication with your teammates. Use the map-ping (alt-left click, the circle with the "!" in the middle.) When you're stuck in battle or any other situation that prevents typing. You can save teammates by predicting the enemy's gank and counter-gank.

3) Know what your hero can do and can't do. Some heroes can way into three enemy heroes, kill one, and beat it out of there before anyone knows what happened. Other heroes walk into three enemy heroes and vaporize. If you have a lot of hp and hp regeneration you can afford to take on two heroes that don't have stuns or disables. If you're a nuker you want to pull off your combo quickly and then start running. Know your limit so your teammates don't find you dead halfway through a fight. Don't be greedy like chasing after an enemy hero when you critical health 15%-30%.

4) Golden rule for head on head combat- Gauge you hp loss in relation to the enemies hp loss. This usually can be decided in three waves of hits. If you meet up against a hero and after three pairs of hits have been exchanged between yourselves run if the enemy has 10% more hp than you do. Unless you have a critical skill you'll probably lose the fight.

The number one thing that you need to beat your enemy and improve as a player is the ability to analyze and adapt to changing situations. The ability to make the right decisions on the go will give you an edge in every situation. This may range from not using a skill in anticipation of an enemy that might blink to you to moving in the optimal direction and using the right skills at the right times to escape pursuit. More than once have a teammate and I escaped from a 4 v 2 gank by well placed decisions and covering for each other while our skills cooled down.
The number two thing that you need to beat your enemy is team work. The difference between a pub and a team vs team game is team synergy. Good teammates can "dance" (rearrange themselves in such a way that the enemy is forces to change targets) and distribute the damage evenly while maximizing damage to the enemy.
Remember, practice makes pwnage Very Happy

Hello everyone! I'm so glad I found this site!

By the way I would just like to thank everyone for their contributions! You wouldn't know how much this has helped me.

So I've been playing avidly for the past week or so and I must say this is a HARD game! Smile

A couple questions...

First of all, what is "denying" I notice a lot of you are saying it in accordance with denying creeps or towers. Does this mean to just run away from? Or as the players from WoW call it, losing agro? I notice I do this a lot when the main melee creeps are low on hp, I'll run away letting the rest of the enemy creeps bash the ranged friendly creep. Is this denying?

Secondly, I'm pretty good at farming (I think) but I'm having a ton of trouble getting kills. When I'm farming creeps on a lane I usually just occasionally harass the other player sporadically until they are pretty low, then I'll try using a spell or something to finish them off. But it never seems to work! They almost always are able to run away! Occasionally I'll be with a group of teamates and we'll get a kill, but I don't really feel like I'm helping. Can anyone go more in depth with stratergies to kill? Also is there a list of heroes that are "Killers and Nukers" Or are all STR / AGI heroes killers and nukers?

I could definitely ask more but I think I'm going on too much lol.

Thanks a lot in advance!
