I SOLVED THE CARD THINGY!

1] The man who picked the cards got 5 of them, right? So that means 2 of those cards must share the same suit, since there are only 4 suits in a standard deck of cards.

2] The assistant looks at the cards, then returns a card [henceforth "card X"]that shares the same suit as the one in the remaining 4 cards. The returned card's value must be lower than that of the retained card unless the gap exceeds 6 , in which the returned card's value must be higher.
Example:
5 and Queen. The queen must be returned. [Gap = 7]
3 and 4. 3 must be returned. [Gap = 1]

3] The assistant puts the card that shares the suit with card X on top or bottom, as not to confuse with other cards. This card [henceforth "Key"] will tell the suit of Card X. The reason is that there is a possibility that more than 2 cards in the original set of 5 shares the same suit.

4] The assistant then arranges the other three cards in such a way that it adds a value from 1 to 6 to the key card, giving the value of Card X.
Explanation:
A suit has 12 cards: A-10, J, Q, K.
The three cards can be ranked by suit and by value to determine the Lowest, the Middle, and the Highest value. [Diamond > Heart > Spade > Clubs]
The cards can be arranged such that it gives a certain number. Example:
LMH = 1
LHM = 2
MLH = 3
MHL = 4
HLM = 5
HML = 6
Other arrangements would work.

5] The assistant gives the arranged stack of the 4 remaining cards to the magician. The magician then checks the Key card then just adds the number corresponding to the arrangement of the other three cards.
Example:
Returned card: A hearts
Cards: 5 hearts, 7 clubs, 9 diamond, 4 spades.
Arrangement: 5H, 7C, 9D, 4S
Key card is on top.

one quick question, I'm sure you thought of this I may have just read it too quickly:
2]Yes, depending on how you explain the case where the difference is greater than 6. I'm guessing you just have the numbers wrap around (counting down goes 4, 3, 2, ace, king.. etc). Just wanted to clarify a bit more.

this is one of the puzzles that left me with a larger than normal sense of gratification.

PPS: is there a reason I still have 0 posts, or is that display problem limited to my machine?
