Need some help with non-em games...
Posted: Thu Jun 26, 2008 8:34 amHey Guys,
Since I started playing dota i have only been playing em games. I know it sounds noobish but all my friends does that and they were the ones to introduce me to dota. Only problem is a few weeks ago i got really bored with that so yesterday I tried a few ar games and it didnt go very well. So do you guys have any advice how to play in non-em. Like how to differ your playstyle, aggressivness, "gankiness", what heroes to use, if you use other items etc. Just any kind of advice how to change your playing style to non-em would be great.

Play alot more agressive as a ranged hero, Say like Viper, use your slow, run up to creeps and harras,
As a melee, your job is to last hit as much as you can, you need that gold,
dont do much unless your ganking or have a good stun

in non-em games, the towers have more hp/dmg and you get less gold so it is harder for late game heroes because it is harder for them to farm
so if you like to play late game heroes, it is better to play more defensive not push so the game will go longer and you can get the advantage
if you like playing early game heroes, you should try to be as aggresive as possible so the enemy never gets the advantage of a long game
em and non-em are very different and it will take a little getting used to

My first non-em games i made the mistake of rushing int heroes too often with agi heroes because that usually works in em games...needless to say..you better dont.
Creeping and harassing is just as important but since int heroes are a lot more common in normal mode, you may not fall behind (int heroes are in general very good creepers with spammable aoe nukes, ranged attacks and usually high base damage).
Always remember. normal mode games shift the balance towards int heroes compared to non-em. If you are good in em games you will however also be good in non-em games once you get used to the new basics.

Yeah, thanks. Then ill better start playing Int heores more :p

Be prepared to last-hit and deny for about three or four times as long and consequently get extremely bored...

it's quite easy to play non-em games...just harass, deny and kill creeps at first and go kill careless heroes!!! It's just quite easy anyways...

When transitioning from EM to non-EM changes generally include:
1. Getting more early-mid gamers for your team.
2. Last hitting, denying and going neutralling as often as you can. Midas helps.

I hate wrong grammar, it reminds me of the b*tch of a teacher I had. So if you don't want to remind me of that b*tch of a teacher, take grammar lessons.

Ok ill think about that. Is it a change in what items to get in a certain part of the game or anything like that? Since you get less gold in non-em should you buy other stuff?

well i cant relate that much since i have never once tried em but
i guess you should make your build cheaper and you should last hit and deny more(a lot more)

Yeh, in em the early game goes by real fast, and ppl tend to auto-attack and push like mad because teh towers are so weak.
In non-em games, you want to play alot more defensivly early game, and even mid game sometimes. Go to www.dota-allstars.com and in the premium guides section (guides->premium guides) theres a guid eto lane control, which will help you out alot with early game.
As far as late game goes, be prepared to be working with alot less money than you'd have in an em game, and also for teh game to last alot longer. Since there's less money (=less items) you need to know how to counter certain heros, which items are most effective for your hero, and which heros are good for which situation. Most of this will come with practice, but it also helps to read strategies. Again, the TDA premium guides has excellent guides to heros which you may find useful. I like DS alot too, you find alot different perspectives here which throw typical players off of their game.

So in non EM, you must NOT get hit by the tower early-mid game. You MUST try to last hit and deny as much as possible. You must NOT chase heroes past the tower in the beginning to try and get a kill. Try not to be so aggressive until u get some decent items. And also, try to push mid with your team as early & often as possible to end it fast.

Much is because of your tips altough I think just playing non-em and get use to it is what matters most. Now when I have some experience it goes alot better. Anyways, thanks again for your tips.
