Diplomacy with mainland Europe - which language?
Posted on Sat Dec 05, 2009 1:15 pmOfficial:
The Domain of Narnia will soon expand diplomatic relations to some country in the great mainland continent of Europe in that world of the sons of Adam, but due to the richness and diversity of the European persons, We are obliged to choose, due to Our limited abilities, one from among many, the first among equals, one language of the European that we must converse in. So therefore We appeal to the wise discernings of the sons of Adam in the Europe continent, what language shall We use to convey our diplomacy to them.

Caspian, 11th of the name,
King of Narnia,
Lord of Cair Paravel,
and Emperor of the Lone Islands

I feel like learning a new language, preferably some European one except UK English (duh). So please suggest to me what do you think is the language for me.
Deutsch? Francais? Nederlands? You make a choice.

Learn German! Germany is not only Europes strongest economic power (so maybe you can use it at work), it is also the most populous among the european nations with 82 million people living there. Combined with the population of Austria and Switzerland, it is the largest native language in Europe.
And its the third most learned language worldwide.
The next reason why you should learn german is, besides that I speak it too
, is that German is (logically) a germanic language, just like English and many more.
So you'll find it easier to learn German than a romanic language (such as spanish, italian, french etc) because the grammar and many vacabularies are very similiar.
Furthermore, many great works in literature were written by german poets, such as Goethe, Schiller and Mann. It was also the language of Einstein, Freud and many more.
So please, learn german. I can help you if you want;)

actually i think spanish is easier to learn than german.
i speak german and a bit spanish. german grammar is almost the same as my native language but i find english to bi more similar to spanish than german.
most of the spanish words are same as in english as english has more words from latin (roman). so you would understand what is the text about even if you wouldnt know the time or relation.
german language on the other hand has totally different greamar, genders and everything than english or spanish. 60% english words have latin roots while 30% have germanic roots, 10% are original. imo
i think you are going to learn spanish easily and faster than german, but german might help you more in europe market. spanish would do you well in the americas thou...
hope this makes sence
edit: also women like spanish! A LOT! (works wonders - tested!)

Learn Tagalog. I once heard that learning multiple simple languages improves your ability to comprehend more complex languages.
So if you start with a simple and efficient langauge, like tagalog, then work your way up, you'd get more countries to join in your weed distorted world.

@B4us
Maybe you are right with the percentages of words etc. But nevertheless english IS a germanic language and therefore is more related to german.
For example, saying "i go" in english is the build of the pronom I and the verb go. In german its "Ich gehe", while it's enough to say "Voy" in spanish.
I speak some spanish too and it's just one example. The whole sentence structure, the combination of verbs and forms differs far more than in german.
But of course, spanish and english are similiar, too.

Learn Swedish.
Once you comprehend Swedish so that it allows you to converse on an easy level, for example asking for directions, ordering food and drinks, having smalltalks, as a tourist, it will get way easier. Also, while learning Swedish you will atleast have a verbal understanding of Norwegian, and some Danish, also some Islandic, however the two latter are not as easy to understand as Norwegian.
It's a great language that is nice to know. Also, considering we got some of the hottest chicks in the world, it's a huge plus if you ever meet one.
They will be quite impressed that a foreigner understands OUR language, since it rarely happens, thus giving you a chance to score if you so wish.
Another plus is, if you know English (which you do) and some German, Spanish and Latin, then Swedish will be easier to learn and understand, since we got alot of similairities from those languages, mostly from around 800-1000 after Christ when the Catholic Church tried to turn the pagan Scandinavia to believing Christians.
Swedish, in my opinion, is the way to go. Best European language ever.
Ofcourse, this is not a professional opinion, just my personal opinion. Also, you never know, one day, having some basic understanding in this language might be great!

@other comments about Euro languages:
Thanks about the comments, that was quite interesting coming from the speakers themselves. I was wondering if anyone will comment about eastern European languages like Greek or Polish? Or maybe even Russian?
