Cloudy Skies

Posted: Sun Dec 03, 2006 4:07 pm

After writing a 20-page document due tomorrow, my brain turned into soup. However, something came up and I had to write it down. It seems that the soup was tasty.

This'll probably be the prologue to my book, more or less.

"Let's end this..."

She looked at Mageon, his short dark hair crackling with lightning. White-robed bodies littered the dusty ground. Their classmates of the Academy. All dead. This was how the test went, every year, every batch. A free-for-all fight to the death among classmates, friends, even lovers.

Mageon and Sarissa were no exception.

She shuddered from the power crackling within him. It was way beyond her power! Everyone knew about Sarissa, the talentless wench who couldn't even form a spear out of pure thought.

"I can't do this, Mageon," she said, putting her hands to her sides. She stared at her own boots, caked in the blood of her friends. At least no one died by her own hand. Mageon did everything. Mageon, who protected her from everyone. Mageon, who promised that he and she would be the last one standing after the whirlwind of death.

Mageon, who would kill her himself.

Mageon's voice thundered amidst the energies that radiated from him. "You know The Code, Sarissa. This is part of it. We all knew that this would happen, and accepted it with open arms. Friendships were made, bonds were tied, but in the end The Code is absolute." What almost was a sigh escaped his soft lips. "For magic to evolve, only the strongest shall be awarded the title of Zardis."

Sarissa tried to clear her mind in order to cast a spell -- any spell -- but her weakness failed her. "I don't want to kill, Mageon. Least of all you. And even if I wanted to, I can never surpass your power."

"I'm sorry if you feel that way, then," Mageon said. He brought his hands forward, aiming them at Sarissa. Mageon. Those hands, she had known well. Too well, those gentle caresses under the stars. They would be the death of her.

"If that is so, then please let me die," Sarissa said. She was afraid, grief-stricken and weak-minded. She would make no Zardis.

Suddenly, a blast of purple lightning hurtled towards her. Sarissa raised her hands to her sides, as if reaching for death with open arms. She hoped there was no pain...

"NO!" She was surprised to hear Mageon's surprised words. Another blast of light flashed in her direction, this time white. It hit the killing spell, which dove for the caster in a straight line instead. Sarissa saw Mageon scream and crumple on the floor.

She cried out and rushed to the man who had never left her side since the beginning. His robes were scorched and his smooth face was shrivelled beyond recognition. "Mageon! Mageon! What happened? Why? Who did this?" Her words were a flurry that only she could understand.

A grotesque smile replied at her anguished face. "Sarissa, you idiot," Mageon whispered. "You taught me everything I know, including the spell... that... saved..."

He never finished his sentence. Sarissa tried crying, but no tears formed in her eyes. She knew who threw that deathbolt. Only one person was capable of even imagining those kinds of spells.

"Eios..." she said through clenched teeth. She looked at the man she had loved, the body not even resembling him. "So you were still alive after all..."

"Indeed, my dear," Eios said, appearing from the mists. Blood was running down his handsome, deathly-white face and contrasting long, black hair. His hands were still smoking from the spell he had thrown. At her.

"I attacked you first because I wanted to fight Mageon myself. He would make a terrible Zardis if he obtained victory from you, the dullest girl in class." He spat on the ground. "I was thoroughly disappointed to see him sacrifice himself to save you."

"You..." Sarissa convulsed with red-hot flames that did not burn her skin or robes. The force of magic arched her back and forced her afloat. Mageon's corpse was the first to be immolated.

"No! This can't be! You can't be
that strong enough!" Eios sputtered, his hands making panicky movements to save himself. A black barrier formed around him, which dissipated as the flames collided with it. His skin was seared off his bones, which were burnt to ash by pure raw magic.

Sarissa screamed. Her voice pierced the cloud of silence, as her flames turned everything -- people, statues, walls -- into white ash.

That night, she became the sun that shone through the darkness of death.

Silver eyes opened to the few twinkling stars in the sky. The clouds blocked most of the heavenly bodies that gave their light when the sun was away, much like the future. Something was coming, just from over the horizon. The land will never be the same, and Sarissa knew it.

But why the nightmare? She asked herself silently what was with her. It had been a hundred and thirty-three years after she had become Zardis. An exiled Zardis, to be exact. The Conclave could not accept the fact that the dullest girl in Mageon's batch had survived the bloodbath. Mageon was the best and brightest who set foot in the Academy so far, of noble birth and disposition. For a graceless upstart to have trounced him, it was unspeakable. She was sent away the moment she received her staff and cloak.

They could not accept her. And her power. One fleeting moment, and she became ten times more powerful than Mageon. She could have easily challenged a member of the Conclave, in terms of raw magical ability.

Sarissa smiled wistfully. It had been too long before she had been called dumb as an ox. She wished there still people to call her that. Her friends. Master Markus. Mageon. Even Eios. Anyone. She felt so alone.

She heard a soft whinny behind her. Looking back at the campfire, Sarissa saw Silverwind staring at her, as if the steed could understand her plight. You are an idiot, Sarissa, for bringing up things that had happened more than a hundred years ago, Silverwind seemed to say.

She lightly touched her long silver hair. It had been brown. But that was so long ago, before she became Zardis. Age had not touched her body, but it had touched her hair.

Mageon. She looked at the few stars visible in the sky, Please watch over me.

Something tells me that the land will be thrown into confusion once more.

Standing up, she gestured for Silverwind to stand. She had to ride.

For those of u that read this it is strangely similar to the movie Battle Royale whish is about dystopic japan with peasent revolts and overpopulation so once every year the govt kidnaps a 9th grade class telling them theyre going on a field trip and instead gasses them on the bus and when they wake up they are on an island with a metal collar placed on thier necks and thier teacher informs them of the battle royale program and that u must kill every other classmate on the island and each are given a package which includes 3 days food and a weopon that can range from a fork to a shotgun with shells. and one player had a radar that told them where nearby classmates were. the collars have a tracking device to show the leaders of the program where each classmate is and the collars have microphones and cameras so they can hear and see the students and foil any escape plans, the colars also have a massive amount of C4 so if anyone trys to remove it they get blown up. to make it easier for the students the island is frequently placed with danger zones meaning if u walk into it u get blown up by ur C4. and if one student is not killed each day everyone blows up and if the game is not ended in a certain period of days they all die. The winner gets to live and go back to normal life and the results and full footage are broadcasted live to stop revolts and it also keeps the population down.
there is also a Bnet custom game based on this Battle Royale TFT by will_kill and Battle Royale
