Dota Noob Guide- Advance players guide (updated)

Posted: Sat Sep 23, 2006 12:27 pm

Firstly What is Dota?

DotA stands for “Defense of the Ancients”, it's a free mod for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. The purpose of the game is to defend your Ancient and try to destroy the opponents Ancient. The ancients are located deep in both bases, which are located at the top right and bottom left corners of the map. There are over 70 heroes that differ greatly in play style. Each of these heroes have been carefully designed so they are both balanced and unique. The map is updated frequently, sometimes to add new heroes, fix bugs or to make a balance update. The strategies possible with DotA are pretty much endless, choosing the wrong item and hero combination can mean the difference between a win and a loss for your team. The gameplay in DotA Allstars can be classified as relatively fast because as the game progresses any small mistake you make can be fatal to the overall team.

The Heroes
Heroes are highly skilled fighters with various magical abilities. Each of these heroes has skills and stats. Heroes start at level one and go up to level 25. When a creep or hero is killed in an area around you, you gain experience. If you get enough experience you gain a level, which means that you gain extra attribute points and one skill point that can be used towards upgrading one of your unique abilities.

The stats are called “Hero Attributes” and determine the basic strengths and weaknesses of a hero, one of these attributes is the “primary attribute” which determines your attack damage and generally the type of hero you control. The 3 Hero Attributes are:

Strength: Each point enhances hit points and hit point regeneration.

Agility: Each point enhances attack speed and armor.

Intelligence: Each point enhances mana points and mana regeneration

Each hero has a total of 5 different skills available. Three of these skills are “normal” skills and can be gotten from the first level. The fourth skill is an ultimate which can be gotten at level 6/11/16, the ultimate can be classified as a more powerful skill then the normal skill in most cases. The fifth skill isn't really a skill but rather an attribute bonus which gives +2 to all your attributes

The Items

You gain a minor amount of gold over time, but most of your gold will be gotten by landing the finishing blow on a hero or creep. With gold you can buy various items. Some of these items are offensive in nature while others are designed for survival. There are specific item combinations that form a more powerful item when put together

Heroes Death
Relax. Your hero will spawn back after some time at your base. Just look at the hero scores at the top right hand side of the screen to see when your hero will come back. The higher the level, the longer he takes so spawn. If you can't wait and you want your hero back immediately, you can buy back your hero from the tavern at a cost.

Stats or Attributes

Strength
Each point in strength gives…
- 19hp
- Increased hp regeneration (About 0.03)
- Additional 1 damage (Strength Heroes)

Agility
Each point in agility gives
- 1% increased attack speed
- 7 points of agility gives 1 point in armour
- Additional 1 damage (Agility Heroes)

Intelligence
Each point in intelligence gives
- 13 mana
- Increased mana regeneration (About 0.04)
- Additional 1 damage (Intel Heroes)

ADVANCE PLAYERS GUIDE
TIP:play a few games before reading
this part
-----------------------------------------------------
Denying and creep's programs
-----------------------------------------------------
As said above, you will get most of your gold for your
items is by landing the finishing blow on a creep or a
hero, but there's more for your knowledge.

Creeps Programs are to hit any enemy target near them
however whenever you use a melee hero, you can never
prevent from fearing creeps hitting you, this is were the creeps programming comes, you can hit those creeps without them hitting you as long as they have an alternate target,
but there is an exception to this rule, even though creeps are busy attacking an alternate target, if you attack their nearby allied hero you will get hit by creeps until you seaze fire, so be careful.

Denying

Denying is just last hitting but you prevent your enemy from getting to much experience, you can do this by pressing A which is a shortcut key for force attack, and target a creep with a critical hp, pressing alt to see their hp is advisable.
------------------------------------------------------------
Creep Pulling, Creep Blocking, and Feeding
------------------------------------------------------------

Creep Pulling
-Creep pulling is pulling neutral creeps from their spots to your creeps so your creeps/ tower can attack them,
From my observation creep pulling occurs only when neutral creep spots are close to the creep road,( top mid bottom)
after a few seconds the neutral creeps are gonna go back to there spot, mostly you can only do this at top and mid lane, at scourge, and mid and bottom for senti without getting sidetracked. You can only do this if your creeps are close to where your neutral creep is being pulled and if there are no enemy creeps, what you do is to show your hero's face to the neutral creeps and let them chase you to where your creeps are coming, once your creeps see them they will attack them, and last hit for xp and gold, you will have a big advantage in this way because you will get pushed back to your tower making you less vulnerable to ganks.

Creep Blocking.

-This is a method to delay your creeps from coming to close to your opponents creeps and to keep them close to your tower so you won't get harrased to much, you could do this by pressing H ( Hold position) in front of your creeps when they appear and moving then stop to press H again, in doing so you will get your opponents creeps farther from there tower or closer to yours.

Feeding
-feeding is a method when you are the one to provide items for a certain teammate. mostly not legal in tournaments.

finally their is no strongest hero in the game each hero has an equal opposite.

DREW pls Sticky!

That's really great guide and not only for noob! Esp for the 'orbs' Smile. However if u still have time to check it out, I suggest checking heroes and items orb effect stack. Eg : 1. Moon glive, stack with life steal, feed back, cold attack. 2. Searing arrow stacks with cold attack. Etc. It will be highly appreciated. Smile

Also, I guess they need to know that when they die they lose 30 x [level at time of death] gold, and (unless i calculated wrong) double this amount for an immediate revival with full hp/mana

@ drfantastico
Denying means killing your own creeps, towers, and even allied heroes.
For more info, please use the search tool and search for "deny".

what do you need to deny an allied hero? sometimes even if an allied hero has little (less than 70) HP, i still couldn't deny an allied hero but my friend denied me when i was low in HP before my enemy could kill me... it said "my name" has been killed by his teammate.. hehe
