No Item Mode?
Posted on Mon Oct 29, 2007 1:11 amJust curious as to what people would think of adding a no item mode to DotA. I have always felt that items are the equalizer of any set of heroes, but do you think this is a viable game mode?
I imagine a no item mode requiring a ton more micro and denying, as experience gains become paramount. The same would hold true for hero battles, with timing arguably being the most important factor.
In regular Warcraft games, items tend to make a marginal difference in solo games and only a moderate difference in team games (save instant healing potions, which are not aviable in DotA--no, Bottle is not instant!) unless--like in DotA--you get stacked after acquiring a bunch of them. Hence, it is a game of microing, unit balancing, and timing.
What are your thoughts? Please don't dismiss the idea outright! I would like to see some constructive criticism.

i suggested the same thing but instead of no items period, it'd be no recipe items.

i feel many int. heroes might suffer
like techies w/o items...
troll might dominate
pit lord might actaully be good
i say good idea =)

I like it.. though some heros would be much more powerfull than others. like an early game nuker like keeper or zeus. and healers such as dazzel omninight and chen. and permabashers no longer become permabashers. nukers would own to hard though.
still like it though

i think the heros with weak health or spells at the beginning would never be seen because of the equalizing factor of consumables. Tanks and nukers would be dominant

i agree with the idea, but i still can't shake off the feeling of running around the map without boots T.T
e.g. rhasta ms - 275 vs CK - 325 ms. . . say if like rhasta use all disables, he kinda screwed

ugh, maybe an un-serious (like -wtf). otherwise, i would always be balanr because i cant take being slow ALL game. gets me so agrivated.

gotta say i agree with no boots being just awful. maybe regen items (bottle, tree, etc.) and boots only? i also think no recipe items would be good too. techies would be utterly worthless in a no item mode, so maybe regen items would negate that problem. speed would definitely be an issue, but range makes up for the lack of speed (and vice versa) in most situations outside of chasing. however if i had to run around with <290 for an hour...

Agreed. Only for fun. However, that kind of map would be far to imbalanced. Some heroes can't do a sh!t without proper items.

An alternative to this is a limited money mode. So, you only get the 3.5k at the beginning of the game, nothing else. Having completely limited items screws so many heroes its just not funny. Having limited cash should help to keep it balanced...

yeh a no item mode wud be cool, but the thought of no boots struk me straight away 2, i rekon the 3.5k thing wud be a good choice, nice idea on that!
