Having problems with guide creation

Posted: Thu Nov 08, 2007 4:00 am

Well I'm writing a long guide for Magina, and I'm finding that when I write up a part of the early game strategy and go to the next step/a new page then come back i lose what I have there already. Am I doing something wrong?

It's not a huge problem, but I'm trying to make a good inclusive guide which is stretching to more pages then i wish to write in a single sitting, and I want to beable to come back to it. Also, in inserting hero portraits etc I sometimes mis-click and drag the picture to outside the text box, which causes my web browser (yes, I am using IE6... this may not be an issue in firefox) to load the picture in the page that I'm currently writing the guide for, destroying my work.

With some limited knowledge of php, I understand that it may be nigh impossible to get back any stuff I've typed before i change web pages without using the specific buttons between sections. But I'm pretty sure it should be possible to output any saved work (I assume you save the text when the 'next' button is clicked) if someone returns to the page.

Also, may i suggest an autosave function to another file every 10 or so minutes, which is wiped should the user choose to save by clicking the 'next' button, and if the user returns to the specific page and the autosave differs from the other save (and the autosave hasnt been wiped by a proper save) it offers a pop-up box asking which one they wish to choose from?

As of now I'm just using ms word to write up my walkthrough, and then copy pasting it in the required places, so I'm more wondering if I'm doing something wrong then trying to blast you for whatever is going on. That being said, any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Catch22

Next time copy whatever you write in each section in a Word document. AFAIK Word accepts the hero/item icons and displays them properly.

Thanks guys... and yes it will be comprehensive. Possibly even too comprehensive (i tend to ramble, and it's looking to be +20 pages, but has summaries at the end of each section). And I'm trying to make it as readible as possible. Should be finished within a week or so, depending on a few things (I'm quoting part of someone elses guide and want to get permission from them first before I include/don't include that part).

Also, in terms of my suggestions, I would be happy to attempt to code stuff for an auto-save or save function: I've just finished half of my high school including a software design course which I did in php (I'm from Aus so this is something around college level not too sure about that), so although I'm not a professional programmer I can give it my best shot, and have the time (and will) to do so.

Cheers,
Catch22

**edit** wow thanks caspian, the icons drag straight in. That's awsome

lol yea i ran into the same problem you did a few days ago actually...i was working on a guide for Harbinger and i would come back to it later and it would be all gone and i had to start all over again...

but i finally managed to finish the guide and i submitted it..but then the next day when i checked..it said none pending..none created..and none submitted...it said i had no history of making a guide...

im not sure if its something i did wrong or if its just somethin im not aware of...

Kesgaea: 25 pages and I'm only halfway through the midgame section. That should be condensed though, I would like to get it under 20 so that people don't get too put off by the length.

Kaptain7: What did the admins have to say about that? I guess another of the good things about writing it in word: backup on your own computer. Highly recommended.

Make it a habit to save it on a word processor. The stuff you write is actually saved in your PC's cache, if I am not mistaken. So the problem might on your end, not ours.

Wouldn't that be impractical, with the numerous reasons to clear your cache, from virus prevention to stopping you parents/partners/workmates checking out what porn you've been viewing?=P Either way, the point still stands, use a wp. Might as well close this thread.
