Posted: Tue Jan 23, 2007 4:36 pmHello guys, I am Daelin and for those who know I am spellmaker, ex-spells moderator on wc3sear.ch and current admin on hiveworkshop, site that took over/saved wc3s. I am also the author of the Mana Void icon (originally named Telekinesis). The hero I am going to present here today won the official Hero Contest from wc3campaigns. So practically the hero is already complete, it only needs some modifications so that it goes with some items in DotA (example: refresher orb).
Many people (especially modders) complain that DotA sucks. I used to have this opinion myself though it kinda changed lately. Why complain about a map that lacks originality and do nothing? I say that improving the map by coming with ideas yourself is so much better.
So sorry about this whole hustle and bustle but I had to share these thoughts. Let's get started.
General Idea
Zealous warriors, many Scarlet Crusaders have been former Knights of the Silver Hand who personally witnessed loved ones struck down by the Scourge only to rise up again as mindless zombies, attacking friends and family. The flames of these experiences have been fanned by the Crusade's leadership to the point of zealotry approaching madness. Crusaders kill anyone they believe to be undead, any mortal they believe may soon be undead, any mortal they assume to be carrying the plague, mortals who stand between the Crusade and undead. Stats
Range: Melee
Attack Cooldown: 2.19
Primary Attribute: Strength
Initial Attributes ( Str / Agi / Int ): 20 / 15 / 18
Bonus Attributes per level ( Str / Agi / Int ): 2.3 / 1.6 / 2.3
Speed: Fast ( 315 )
Initial Armor: 6
Initial HP: 600
Initial MP: 270
Note: The stats have been tested in an actual melee game and I can guarantee that the hero is balanced. DotA heroes keep general melee stat balancing.
Abilities
And now we get to my favorite part: Spells. The hero possesses a chain damaging spell, an AoE curse, a passive and a self-active ultimate.
Insidious Beacon
Conjures a beam of negative damage at a nearby enemy that jumps to other enemy units too, and deals damage depending on the current amount of hit points lost. The spell has a maximum damage limit (higher damage cannot be dealt to an unit by the spell).Each jump deals less damage (damage reduction affects maximum damage limit too).
Area of Effect: 525
Range: 750
Mana Cost: 85/100/115/130
Cooldown: 11.5
Damage: 75/100/125/150% of target's lost HP.
Maximum targets: 4/6/7/9
Maximum damage: 120/215/320/415
Minimum damage (only during Radiance): 60/100/150/220
Blood Mana
Curses all the units in an area so that everytime they cast a spell, they receive an amount of damage. The damage depends on the spell's mana cost. If Radiance is active, the spell also affects friendly units (healing them instead of causing damage).
Duration: 12/15/18/21 seconds
Cooldown: 17 seconds
Mana Cost: 75/90/110/120
Range: 775
Area of Effect: 345
Damage/Heal: 60/90/120/150% of the mana spent.
Martirism
Gives the Crusader a chance to transfer half of the damage received to a nearby friendly unit. The spell automatically seeks the unit with the highest hit points. Transfered damage can be lethal and bounty is granted to the unit causing the damage (even if it is caused by a spell buff).
Area of Effect: 350/375/400/425
Rate of success: 14/21/33/41%
Radiance Effect: Damage is absorbed rather than transfered.
Radiance
Highly boosts the maximum hit points of the hero but the bonus slowly wears off with the spell. Also boosts all abilities, but boost bonus does not increase with Radiance level.
Mana Cost: 200/280/390
Cooldown: 140
Duration: 45/50/70
Bonus Hit Points: 70%/100%/125%
Hero Purpose
The hero is extremely powerful in team games but in solo can sometimes prove vulnerable if items are not planned carefully. His self-skills are designed to absorb damage (martirism splits it to enemy units while Radiance highly boosts his MAXIMUM Hit Points). Be careful though that sometimes a higher amount of HP can prove dangerous with spells such as Reaper's Scythe and Sunder which do not take into consideration the actual amount of hit points, but percentage.
Blood Mana and Insidious Beacon can make him a good anti-mage+finisher (because of the damage depending on the life loss) but can also be parried so should be carefully placed (usually Insidious Beacon with a Dagon or in tandem with Laguna Blade/Thundergod's Wrath can do miracles).

Stats: Stats and gains are pretty balanced,good on that. you might think of making the base attack speed faster and the armor a bit lower. By calculations, Hp would be 530 and mana would be 234.
Skills:
Insidious Beacon:
Deals damage equal to 150% of unit's missing HP or 415 damage(whichever is smaller). Fair enough for me. Needs a harassed enemy early to fully benefit, can pull off a 1st blood with a nuker.
Blood Mana:
Too long of a duration for it's effects. 9/11/13/15 sec duration. Keep cooldown at 17 seconds.
Martyrism:
A bit broken while affected by radiance. Lower chances to 30% at level 4 to balance. 41% to halve damage is a too powerful a skill.(by absorb,you mean null half the damage right? since normally, half damage gets diverted to an allied unit)
Radiance: Boosts HP values by certain percentages,and boosts other skills. I can imagine this to get you to 6K hp easily with a heart of tarrasque. Nerf it to 70/90/110% and the bonuses fade at a rate of 1% per second. Lvl2 duration buff to 60 seconds. Lvl3 duration buff to 75 seconds.
Synergy:
Martyrism and Radiance have very good synergy with each other. The first 2 skills just serve mainly as nukes.
Role:
Tank. Can take a lot of punishment.
Flavor:
Crusader.Protector of the weak, slayer of evil.
Welcome to DS and feel free to post this using the Hero Builder.Looks like Drew approves of this anyway, so no problems with approval. Maybe wait a bit more for tweaks.

Tehee... you people around here know little about modding, eh? Ideas and stuff come easily, but when it comes to implementation, it's more difficult. Well, it's better to actually KNOW how to put in practic your ideas, basically because you can tell what's possible and what's impossible.
To use the hero in your map, you can check my Spells Importing Tutorial . The tutorial explains how to import a spell, but you will practically need to import all of them, followed by the hero himself (from object editor). Good luck and have fun.
