Is it the items that really make the hero win?
Posted: Tue Feb 20, 2007 11:04 amAssuming that all are pro players with
equal experience and same strategies and
counter strategies from one team and the
other.
Secondly, it is said that there is no hero
with a counter hero because
all heros are unique in thier own way
with thier own special abilities.
This is what I mean
You may say that not all heroes have mana burn
or mana drain but a player can buy a necronomicon
to have that ability right?
If your hero has no stun, you can buy a basher
and a hyperstone to stun him (permabash)
or use a guinsoo to disable an enemy if your hero has
no disable skill, and maybe if your character has
no lifesteal you can buy satanic and other lifestealing
items for your hero to have a lifesteal, and
a blink dagger if your hero has no blink skill.
If your enemy is a melee buy a blademail to return
a percentage of the damage, if the enemy hero
rely much on mana one can buy a bkb to
make the skill useless to you.
And you can gank an enemy always, for him
not able to farm well so he cannot buy the items
he can possibly use to make him strong in game
or to counter your skills.
So, what do you think pros out there?
Is it the items that make you win?
(Pls. take note of my first paragraph
in case you forget)
Thank you.

Maybe, maybe not.
You still have to consider the skills of the hero.

rely on the hero's skills, and your skills.
as mike said, 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will. 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and a hundred % to remember the name, lol.

Items can be countered again and again. Hero;s can be gang banged even if he is strong. Win = Diskarte. OR maybe sometimes luck helps you/

One of the things about this "do items make the hero great" question, is that if you've played enough games, you realize that to get the best items, you have to be a great player to begin with. So yes the items do make the player great, because they show the skill shown early on.
This is just my point of view.

And also by experience, if you think you're a NOOB. Well, think again, all of us started as a NOOB. We just grew up to become good players because of experience. Playing with good players gives you more knowledge the next time you play. Keep on playing! But dont forget your studies.

Simply put, if you are really good, then you do get the chance to have better and better items. Unless your team is pooling.
But in the early game, even if you have only Bracers and RoR, you can get gold/kills if you play very well, netting you a chance for better items as well. So sometimes it factors in, and most of the time it really does.

Item/s is just a factor for winning. If you don't farm and kill eventually you won't succeed. Experience, familiarity and understanding of the overall aspect of the game, heroes, skills, items are to be considered as well. so basically It's still not enough to say that items can make a hero win. I agree with everybody here.

In the case of such a perfect game it would be strategy that dominates. When I say strategy I also mean managing hits for creeps (last hitting and denying) as well as lane managing (making sure a powerful range doesn't get matched with a melee hero). If you're talking about pros at DOTA gold should not be too large of a problem and in turn items. Guinsoo with Linkens is great but won't turn a game around if the other team knows what they're doing. Items are only conveniences that make the game go by faster. In a pub 3 heroes that can coordinate an attack extremely well can walk into 5 opposing heroes, kill at least 2, and live to tell about it.
Items only expediate the game, strategy ends it.

Here's a thought: in pub games, when (or usually if) there's a leaver, there's a big fight over the items. Sometimes, there is no fight, and the entire team concurs that a certain player deserves the best items. Why? Because they played the best throughout the game.
