Role of Heroes

Posted: Mon Feb 26, 2007 3:06 pm

I classify Hero's Role to 4 parts:

1. Initiater
IMO this is the most important role in a Team Battle. The role is to open a gangbang. If the hero open correctly, the team usually wins the battle.

Example:
-Raigor, Magnus, Leviathan, Centaur Warchief
The type of these initiaters to blink and do their area stun skills, then they generally die, in other word, their function is also as a tanker. Because of that, the compulsory items they should buy is Blink Dagger and some items which can help them survive as long as possible (Vanduard, HoT, Aegis)

-Vengeful Spirit
The type of this initiater has to be played by a smart player who can decide exactly how you can swap a hero in a advantage situation to your team. Experience is also needed.

-Enigma
The tactic is also the same with the first type, the different is Enigma don't have to be tanker after he open the gangbang.

2. Killer
The role of this kind of heroes is to farm and make damage items, usually they should make Aegis/Rapier. The key is farming and help team if really needed.

Example:
Viper, Clinkz, Medusa, Syllabear

3. Nuker
The role of this kind of heroes is to harass the enemy hero(es) on the lane. Nukers usually work in pair or even three in a lane. They’re usually good on the early game only.

Example: Lina & Rylai, Lich & Pugna, THD, Necrolyte, Krobelus, Enchantress

4. Supporter
The healing heroes include on this role. Their role is to support their allies by netralising the AoE damage such as Epicenter, Freezing Field, Echo Slam, Poison Nova etc. And also to buy and place wards. Generally, this kind of heroes become the lowest on the final scoreboard, although their team win (look at my Chen replay)

Example: Chen, Purist, Aiustha, Necrolyte, Dazzle

That’s all the classification. Other roles of hero such as disablers, tanker, chaser etc is not really important in a team, even can be useless. Most players often forget the first one, initiater, because they will hardly kill a lot of enemies. It’s the biggest fault I found in a game, no initiater or bad one. DotA is a team game. Some heroes like Lycantrope, Nai’x and Balanar is the most useless heroes in a team since they can’t contribute enough role to their team. I never see, even once, that there’s a team using those heroes and play amazingly, because they’re too fragile as a killer or tanker and have no use if they’re being disabled. If your purpose in playing DotA is just for fun, then there’s no problem, but if you want to win a game consider the three roles of heroes to be exist in your team. Generally a team need 1 initiater, 1 killers, and 3 nukers. That’s all my basic theory on Roles of Heroes.

Comments are appreciated.

Nice classifications. Be better if you can break it down more.

It seems the same as saying they are the INT STR and AGI types but with broader scope.

Decent work!

No, it's not the same. However I agree that most of initiater are Str, Killers are Agi, Nukers and Supporters are Int but that's generally. There're some exceptions like Enigma as a initiater, Purist as supporter, Visage and Furion as killers, etc.

For some heroes like Furion, I don't claim that he'll better to become killer. It also depends on you characteristic, but when I watch pro replays, Furion always uses as killers since he farms quickly with his continually Wrath of Nature and Teleport skill.

erm, IMO killer should be changed to damager/potential killing. the reason is those heroes usually wear out the atleast 1 of the enemies to red, and sometimes they get the kill. when the enemy is red, usually he runs, and its harder to get the kill.

from the point above, i think u underestimated the role of Chaser, which pursuits the running enemy after the damager has worn him out. killing a hero would be more helpful than letting him heal at fountain, as killing gives bounty which can bring a team closer to a win. example of these heroes would be balanar, naix, PA, SA, gondar, lycan (basicly anyone with enough speed to outrun the escaper) or zeus (with a full map nuke that has considerable damage even at late game).

nukers become damagers during mid-late game. their nukes will help in wearing down the enemy. for some heroes, their late game path is nuker -> supporter, example : chen (early game he has penitance and test of faith as nuke), bane, enigma

overally u still made a really good and clear point about roles in team. good job ^_^

Chaser heroes only good at usual games, I mean nobody know each other, so the teamwork is still very little. On team battle chaser heroes like Banehallow, Nai'x, Balanar, Ulfasaar, etc will be useless. The reason is when the team battle begin, they'll take AoE damage from enemies. The point why they aren't good for team battle is they're melee heroes who don't have big HP and easy to kill by disabling them. The killers generally are Agi range heroes, since they can handle a solo lane, so they can have more gold and exp.

Some melee Agi heroes which are sometimes used in team battle is Faceless Void for his Chronosphere, and Magina for his Void and Mana Break. Rikimaru is also great since he has smokescreen, which is silent area and perma invis, which can be used to spy the enemies. I've watched plenty of replays but I've never found any team which used Nai'x, Balanar, Barathrum, Banehallow and any other self-centered melee heroes.

nice but there are some heros that are wildcrds and can be classifyed as 2 or more categories
void doesnt fit and Bane could be an opener nuker or disabler its good but we need more categories to classify heros.

I classify the Role of Heroes which are the most important in a team. Another role like: tanker, chaser, disabler usually include on another role. For example: Most Initiaters are tanker, most nukers are disabler, and most killers are chaser but tankers are not always initiater, disablers are not always nukers and chasers are not always a good killer in a team. Bane is a Nukers in a team since his Brain Sap and Grip could kill enemies quite easily on early game.
