Skarter, the Rogue

Posted: Mon Mar 12, 2007 2:40 am

This is my first hero, so please don't flame me.

Skarter, the Rogue

Skarter - Rogue Range: 100 | Move Speed: 310
Primary: AGI
Str: 17 + 2.1 | Agi: 21 + 2.9 | Int: 15 + 1
Damage: 53 - 55 | HP: 473 | Mana: 190
HP Regen: 0.55 | Mana Regen: 0.55
Attack Speed: 1.38 | Armour: 5

Skarter spent almost his whole life alone in the streets, which has taught him many tricks of the trade. From how to escape from unwanted company, knife handling skills, and pin-point precision, these are the skills that have made him worth the 100,000 gold the Sentinel have offered him for his services.

Knife Fling (F)
Skarter throws one of his knives with absolute precision that deals damage to one target. This damage cannot be evaded, reflected and ignores armour. Casting range increases
with level. Does not ignore Spell Resistance.
Level 1 - Deals 85 damage and has 400 casting range.
Level 2 - Deals 170 damage and has 500 casting range.
Level 3 - Deals 255 damage and has 600 casting range.
Level 4 - Deals 340 damage and has 700 casting range.
Manacost: 95/115/135/155
Cooldown: 12 seconds
Framework: Looks like one of the "Fan of Knives" knives.
Notes: His basic nuke.

Fade Away (D)
Skarter knows when he's outmatched and outmanned and uses his skills to escape in the shadows. Skarter gains no collision, increased armour and spell immunity for 3 seconds at all levels. Cannot exceed maximum movespeed.
Level 1 - Gains 3 armour.
Level 2 - Gains 6 armour.
Level 3 - Gains 9 armour.
Level 4 - Gains 12 armour.
Manacost: 75/80/85/90
Cooldown: 20/25/30/35 seconds
Framework: Skarter's character model turns completely black like a shadow/outline and becomes mildly transparent, similar to that of Morted's Level 1/2/3 Blur.
Note: Used for both escape and chase.

Incredible Dexterity (E)
Skarter's many years of experience have given him a great increase in both the speed of his blows and the speed of his legs. Skarter gains increased attack and movement speed.
Level 1 - 10% increased attack speed, 4% movespeed
Level 2 - 20% increased attack speed, 6% movespeed
Level 3 - 30% increased attack speed, 8% movespeed
Level 4 - 40% increased attack speed, 10% movespeed
Manacost: N/A
Cooldown: N/A
Framework: Very similar to Lycanthrope's Feral Heart, with a higher attack speed, but lowered movespeed.
Note: Passive Numero Uno

Precision Strike
Skarter uses his daggers to aim for the most vital parts of the enemy, both lowering it's defense and giving a chance to create incredible blood loss. Orb Effect.
Level 1 - Target loses 2 armour, 10% chance to maim doing 20 bonus damage and reducing attack and movement speed by 20% for 4 seconds
Level 2 - Target loses 4 armour, 15% chance to maim doing 30 bonus damage and reducing attack and movement speed by 30% for 4 seconds
Level 3 - Target loses 6 armour, 20% chance to maim doing 40 bonus damage and reducing attack and movement speed by 40% for 4 seconds

Discussion:
Skarter is an AGI/STR hero so he's not as killable as Khardel but he is still an agility hero so play him with CARE. Permanently.

His Knife Fling is used that way mainly for the heroes that have increased armour, abilities such as Darkterror who can negate nukes with Timewalk, and abilities such as Mercurial who reflect damage. It has slightly above average damage, above average range, and to compensate, above average manacost and above average cooldown.

Fade Away is his escape move, but not always so. It can be quite easily used as a way to push through a large battle to get to an escaping hero on low health. The increased armour, spell immunity, and no collision may seem like alot, but it is only for 3 seconds and has an large cooldown to compensate for it's low manacost.

Incredible Dexterity is one of the two passives that Skarter has. This is a simple ability that I would expect a Rogue to have, so it makes sense that Skarter would have it. It's essentially a knock off of Lycanthrope's Feral Heart but with a higher attack speed, and lower movement speed.

Precision Strike is an ultimate that I feel is easily better than my previous one (Rogue Mastery :S) and definitely more balanced. A built in maim should not be acquired so easily, so I improved slightly and pushed it to being an ultimate. I had a choice between Armour Reduction, and damage increase, but I really preferred the idea of a Rogue knowing where to hit instead of just randomly being better at fighting.

Suggested Skill Build:

1. Knife Fling
2. Fade Away
3. Knife Fling
4. Incredible Dexterity
5. Knife Fling
6. Precision Strike
7. Knife Fling
8. Incredible Dexterity
9. Incredible Dexterity
10. Incredible Dexterity
11. Precision Strike
12. Fade Away
13. Fade Away
14. Fade Away
15. Stats
16. Precision Strike
17-25. Stats

The reason for this build is as follows: Starting out maxing Knife Fling is mainly so Skarter has his starting nuke, which is important for many heroes so I thought the same of him. Fade Away has only one level until mid-late game as you won't need the increased armour until people can really dish out serious damage as you try to run past. Incredible Dexterity I feel is more important than Stats because the increased movement and attack speed are important for an agility hero with one nuke that has a rather large cool down. Precision Strike is gotten as soon as possible as well because it's really a cross between Sange/Yasha and Stygian Desolator which would be important for a kill. (Incidentally, I have not decided on whether or not his ultimate would be an orb effect, so...opinions would be very welcome)

Skill Synergies:

Well, honestly? The way to play Skarter is to start the battle by harassing the enemy with a Knife Fling. Then enter
the battle and attack the enemy. Your increased attack speed, and the damage that you do is pretty high and should be enough to scare the enemy back. The maim may have triggered also so once they try to run, they won't get far. Continue attacking and if necessary, use Fade Away to chase as it will stop them being able to stun and run, and they will also not be able to hope for creep blocks as you have no collision. Should you get the kill without Fade Away, and their assistance shows up late and you're on low health, a quick Fade Away will get you out of their nuking reach and allow you to escape.

Early Item Build:

Ring of Regeneration/Ancient Tango of Essification: You haven't got much health yet, and do you really want to have to run back to the fountain all the time?

Boots of Speed: Everyone gets em. This guy doesn't exactly need em cos of the 10% passive, but extra movespeed never hurts.

Bracer/Wraith Band/Null Talisman: They're all good, depending on the situation. If you want the mana to harass with Knife Fling, get Null Talisman, if you find yourself getting nuked and need more health, get Bracer, but otherwise get Wraith Band.

Mithril Hammer: Extra damage is good on Skarter cos you want them to turn back so you can beat them silly. Besides, Mithril Hammer can turn into one of three fantastic item for Skarter.

Mid Item Build:

By now, depending on how well you've been doing with kills, you can either use that mithril hammer for one of three things:

Cranium Basher: With the increased attack speed, and being melee, plus already having maim, this really helps those
chases that you just can't keep up in. It's simple to make (just add Gloves of Strength and Cranium Basher recipe) and
very VERY effective. That little bit of health helps too.

Maelstrom: Increased agility and damage is great, as well as adding the Chain Lightning proc. It's honestly my least favourite of the three, but it does eventually become Mjollnir so it's up to you.

Stygian Desolator: My personal favourite. This is what you'll get if the game is going really well. If you've gotten plenty of kills, then you should get this beastly little weapon. So it's a toss up between this and Basher for me.

Power Treads: You should get this now cos attack speed is what you want for that Maim proc. Alternatively, if the game is going AMAZING for you, and your already Beyond Godlike, keep the boots, and buy a hyperstone. Saves time for later and allows you to get boots of travel instead.

Late Game:

Mjollnir: If you did go Maelstrom, then you should be going this mighty weapon now. It is big and huge, but...frankly? I just have issues with it. My personal preference, but if you want it, get it, and use lightning to kill things.

Butterfly: For Skarter, evasion is a must, I didn't add it to his built in skills cos I thought that'd be broken so go this happy little guy. With this little thing in tow, the plus 50% attack speed, +50 damage, and the evasion, you've just gotten a lot more scary.

Buriza: Honestly, Buriza is just if you're running out of ideas on what to get. It's a fantastic weapon, extra damage is huge, and crits will help. But it's alot more of a bonus, than a must. Get this or Heart of Tarrasque depending on your enemies. If you're against nukers, Skarter could use some hitpoints.

Eye of Skadi: If the game is still going by now, and it's going well enough for you to thrash everything, this thing should be next. What's that? Maim...AND Frost? And Stun/Defense Lowering/Chain Lightning? Well... that's... mean... And don't forget the hitpoint/Stat bonus too.

Allies:

The best allies are pretty much what you expect, anything that can stun, or disable, or slow are automatically fantastic. Stunners like Ogre Magi, Anyone with storm bolt and Shendelzere are fantastic. Slows are fine too, from Viper, Netherdrake, Enchantress, anything you can get your hands on are good. Nukers are also great, although you probably won't get many kills with them helping you, which is fine (It's a team game Smile). Tanks are also good if the enemy attacks them first, and you show up and just get some punches in while the tank stuns them and you two tear them apart.

Enemies:

Nukers are great allies, and horrible enemies. Beware Lina and Lion, Rylai and Lich, Zeus, these guys will hurt you so much that by the time you get close, they don't care anymore and will kill you with great ease. Three second get away? They don't care. Tanks aren't your greatest enemies either. You may have more damage than them, but they happen to have MUCH more hitpoints than you. Mind you, this is true with most Melee Agility heroes anyway, so maybe I'm just being pedantic.

End Game Stats:

Lvl 25
1810 Hit points
710 Mana
40 Int
70 Str
94 Agi
126 - 128 Damage
15 Armour

And this is without the 10 levels of Stats, or Items.

Update 1.1 Nerfed Fade Away, Nerfed Precision Strike, still out of ideas for the ultimate. Suggested ideas would help.

Update 1.2 Changed Fade Away drastically, changed Precision Strike to ulti, added Incredible Dexterity. Also upped base damage slightly.

Update 1.3 Changed Precision Strike to make it more like the Sange maim, but more powerful, also made it an orb effect. Also added "Does not ignore Spell Resistance" to Knife Fling, because some people bugged me about it.

Update 1.4 Properly changed his hitpoints so that he had the correct amount based off the guide that is stickied in this forum. (It's an awesome guide. I recommend reading it to all)

I dunno about 1-3 skills, but the ulti? pretty imba to me.

Each hero hit will give you 30 gold? You kill a hero will give ya 100+1x5 gold.. and you even steal gold... TOO IMBA. Major nerf/change on the skill..

Very imbalanced last skill. You prob want to make it a non-passive skill with a cd and mana cost that increases each level.

Knife fling = Fine
Fade away = Overpowered. See Sprint. Reduce armor, increase manacost.
Precision Blade = Maim = 35% slow?
Rouge Master = Gold steal is a bad idea. Needs some reworking.

@ Yukino

Thanks for the ideas, I've seen the heroes you've built and...wow. Honestly, I know it sounds like sarcasm (it's kinda hard to not make it sound sarcastic with just words) but I do value your opinion on the matter.
