Eun and Ras

Posted: Sun Nov 19, 2006 11:39 am

I'm not sure if it's okay posting non-DotA related stories here. Anyways this is an excerpt from a book that I'm going to write soon. I hope I can pull this off in time before I reach twenty. Asa. XD

Eun wiped the blood off his blade on his opponent's body. It was another boring duel, lasting less than a minute. He wondered if everyone he had fought up until now was weak, or if he was just too strong for their own good. The sun cast its rays on his half-naked body, seemingly to congratulate him for another victory.

"You killed another one today, Eun," a deep voice told him from behind, accompanied by heavy footsteps.

"It was either me or him," Eun said, turning to face his master, Lord Ras of Sardonia. The one-armed knight wore his burnished silver cuirass. His greaves seemed like shoes on the ground littered with autumn leaves. "And of course it had to be him."

"In my time, duels were not fought to the death," Ras said, frowning. "At least, you could choose to spare your opponent."

"You'll just let him come back again in order to kill you?"

"That is why you spare your opponents, Eun," Ras said. "In order to let them be stronger so that the next fight would be more fruitful."

Eun returned his long sword into its silver sheath. "Sometimes I wonder what it is it you truly believe, Lord Ras. You could be merciless one day and compassionate the other, and preach your strange values to other people."

"I merely adapt to the circumstances," Ras said. "Because a sentinel is always dead--"

"And a wanderer always living," Eun finished. A sentinel is a person who merely stands firm in one place, fighting back the world until he is overwhelmed. A wanderer is a person who is always on the move, living off land and adapting to his surroundings as needed. He would always choose the latter over the former. "There is something I would like to ask of you, Lord Ras," he said. "Why become a knight of Sardonia, and be tied down to the complexities of court life?"

"You will know when the time is right," Ras merely replied. "Now take your opponent's weapon."

Eun glanced at the bloodied body of the boy he had just killed moments ago. His opponent was even younger than him, and had had a fiery temperament that also caused his own downfall. He picked up the sword lying on the ground, a few spans away from his opponent's hand.

"It's curved and made beautifully," Eun said, holding the sword before his eyes. "The blade is a little shorter than my sword's." He paused for a while and lowered the sword, frowning at his dead opponent. "I think he relied too much on his weapon than on himself."

"He seemed not to be of this land," Ras said, walking over to take a better look at the dead boy. "Perhaps he was seeking worthy opponents, and was unlucky to face someone he couldn't defeat."

"Maybe so," Eun said. He did not feel right about the duel or the circumstances. Fight me or face your destiny, it was what his challenger had told him before they fought. He flicked a few rogue strands of black hair from his eyes. And those moves... he could vaguely remember where he had seen them, but every time a place would come up, the picture disappeared instantly.

"Master, I beg my leave of you," he said after a long pause.

"And where will you go, Eun?" Ras asked, without as much as a surprised look in his eyes. Eun envied his master's air of nonchalance and indifference, because to him everything seemed trivial and predictable, as if he could solve problems before they occurred.

"Away..." Eun said. "I don't know. I have to look for something. I want to see the world for my own..." He lowered his eyes on the strange sword he was holding. "I think I'm going to keep this, too," he said.

"Please do so," Ras said. "It would be a waste of a good sword." He knelt down at the dead boy's side to say a few prayers. "Help me here, Eun."

"Help you on what?" Eun asked, already taking his opponent's ebony sheath for his own.

"On burying this boy," Ras said, with an air of command in his voice. "You made this mess, therefore you must clean it up, too. I can't dag this body into the grave with my one arm."

"As you wish, Lord Ras," Eun said.
