Chen’s potential as a hero-killer has been overlooked by many. He’s an underestimated hero - something you can use to your advantage. According to me a hybrid battle-support Chen is the best way to go. Most people play Chen as a pure support hero - this causes him to become a soft target in battles. During ganks, he has hardly anything to contribute apart from his slow when played as a support; once dead, his valuable heal - a deciding factor - is removed. Remember, microing is an integral part of Chen’s gameplay; if you’re not too good at microing, you might want to practice against AI opponents until you get used to it. In this guide, I hope to teach you how I play Chen and to overcome all the above-said obstacles - have fun reading!

Chen

Chen - The Holy Knight

Range: 600 | Move Speed: 300
Primary: INT
Str: 20 + 1.5 | Agi: 15 + 2.1 | Int: 21 + 2.8
Damage: 43 – 53 | HP: 530 | Mana: 273
HP Regen: 0.85 | Mana Regen: 0.85
Attack Speed: 1.48 | Armor: 1
Penitence Penitence (E)
Forces a unit to accept punishment for its sins, causing it to move slower and accept more damage from attacks and spells. Lasts 7 seconds.
Level 1 - 8% movement speed reduction, and 7% increased damage taken.
Level 2 - 16% movement speed reduction, and 14% increased damage taken.
Level 3 - 24% movement speed reduction, and 21% increased damage taken.
Level 4 - 32% movement speed reduction, and 28% increased damage taken.
Mana Cost: 100
Cooldown: 14 seconds
Comment: Your key to solo kills, as well as helping your team out in ganks. 28% increased damage is no joke, and when a whole team is beating down on a target, even tanks will go down in a matter of seconds. The 32% MS reduction makes escape close to impossible if the enemy has no escape mechanism - more so if you can micro properly. This skill is essential for a ganking Chen. NOTES: >The slow is removed by Purge but the target would still receive amplified damage. >This is blocked by Linken's Sphere. >Penitence deals Normal damage which is reduced by the target's Armor and is blocked by Stout Shield, Vanguard and Kraken Shell. >Does not affect units with Spell Immunity.

Test of Faith Test of Faith (F)
If cast on enemy, will deal variable damage based on the unit's faith. If cast on allied Hero, it will teleport the hero to safety. Instantly teleports Chen's persuaded units to safety.
Level 1 - 50-100 Damage to foes, 6 second casting time for allies.
Level 2 - 100-200 Damage to foes, 5 second casting time for allies.
Level 3 - 150-300 Damage to foes, 4 second casting time for allies.
Level 4 - 200-400 Damage to foes, 3 second casting time for allies.
Mana Cost: 175
Cooldown: 30 seconds
Comment: Your nuke, as well as an escape/teleport mechanism for your allies. Also, it INSTANTLY teleports your persuaded units to your fountain. A very versatile skill, but is gotten last, only due to the sheer value of the other spells. NOTES: >You can input the command "-disablehelp" to make an allied Chen unable to teleport you to the fountain using this skill. >Does not teleport allied Hero with Spell Immunity. >This is not blocked by Linken's Sphere but triggers its cooldown. >Penitence deals Pure damage which is unreduced by anything and is blocked by Spell Immunity.
Holy Persuasion Holy Persuasion (R)
Takes control of a target enemy unit.
Level 1 - 1 unit Max. 75 HP Bonus.
Level 2 - 1 unit Max. 150 HP Bonus.
Level 3 - 2 unit Max. 225 HP Bonus.
Level 4 - 3 unit Max. 300 HP Bonus.
When persuading a new creep above your max unit count, a random persuaded unit (which could be the one you just persuaded) will die.
Mana Cost: 100
Cooldown: 30 seconds
Comment: The skill Chen is known for - and every enemy should fear. At level 4, it lets you control 3 units. The choice of units to be Persuaded will be mentioned in the guide, and varies with the situation. It is also your jungling skill, and allows you to jungle from Level 1. With proper micro, any hero (well, almost - darn those pesky perma-bashers) will buckle down to the fury of this Holy Knight. NOTES: >Cannot target Ancient Creeps, Spell Immune units and Heroes. >When the limit has been reached, and a new unit is dominated, a random unit will be killed (even the newly persuaded one can be killed).
Hand of God Hand of God (D)
Fully regenerates your converted creeps. Heals all allied heroes on the map.
Level 1 - 200 HP Healed.
Level 2 - 300 HP Healed.
Level 3 - 400 HP Healed.
Mana Cost: 200/300/400
Cooldown: 120 seconds
Comment: Another one of Chen's signature moves, this skill is invaluable in ganks and while an ally/you is/are trying to escape with low HP. Hand of God, combined with Mekansm heals 650 HP in an AOE - 400 of which is global. And remember, it instantly brings all you Persuaded creeps to full HP. Hand of God and completely turn the tides of a battle if used correctly.

@pasta: Thanks! I've been trying to write new guides, but I don't have much time right now... I'll do one when I can :)

389 By pasta360 2010-03-09

this is a great commentary you should do a newer one.

388 By Facsimile 2010-03-03

Comment below is one of the LOL dota experiences.

387 By bobbob247 2010-03-03

I remember a Naix infested one of Chen's creep, and then Chen used Test of Faith and just parked it in the fountain until Naix made a break for it and died.

386 By Foore-Woorior 2010-03-03

The problem with that trick is that the creep you convert dies randomly if you are over your cap, you might kill it, Test of Faith when used on your OWN creeps is instant

385 By Castbreeder 2010-03-03

Its no good because teleport needs 2 or 3 seconds to work. Test of Faith needs 6-3 seconds to work. If You have cat reflexes its possible. (The comment below is a stupid mistake).

384 By Castbreeder 2010-03-03

Its no good because teleport needs 3 or 4 seconds to work. Test of Faith needs 5 seconds to work

383 By joshie 2010-03-03

test of faith, when enemies TP on creep, convert the creep and send them to your fountain (Y)

o.o thx.......

If you want a support build, Guinsoo is a MUST. You can take off one Bracer for Necro, because Necro adds HP + Mana. The other item that I would consider taking off is Pipe. Maybe let some other hero carry it, like Dark Seer.

380 By Max_LKC 2010-02-27

i have a question crash.....my usual build is
bracer
phase
vlads
scepter
pipe
guinsoo
i'd like to improve my microing by challeging myself by using hotd n necro bt i cnt seem to find any optional item to take out..i was thinking of taking out guinsoo n pipe for them wat do u think? any suggestion? n i wan to build a support type build...

379 By L|c00ffbd00ight 2010-02-11

@SALBAHEAKO Hey, that's a good build! a little flaw though. what are you gonna do if the enemy knows how to play ..im just sayin

378 By Crash and Burn 2010-02-07

Ring of Basilius, or send them to the fountain. If you have a Rylai on your team, her Brilliance Aura will replenish mana. Similarly, Arcane Ring will, too. However, don't get Arcane on Chen. Leave it for other heroes to get.

377 By bemboll 2010-02-05

how do you heal ur persuaded creeps mana????

376 By jhad_socorum 2010-01-30

hey, dude!!!
tnx 4 the tips,,,

375 By SALBAHEAKO 2009-12-13

My items from start to end are....

Branch
Branch
Flying Courier
Phase Boots
Mekansm
Maelstrom
Aghanims
Mjolnir
Shivas
Assault

Trust me, you'll trigger so many chains and the static thing on mjolnir will benefit when people attack you. The attack speed rapes so much, they'll die easily.

374 By Crash and Burn 2009-12-12

... advantage in that 2 heroes can solo. You have to remember that Chen's HP is close to crap early on without any items. Playing solo mid can make you susceptible to early ganks from either lane. Chen is also not a Rune whore by any means, so the advantage of laning mid for runes is wasted. I'd rather let a Mirana or Nevermore solo mid if needed, because they can effectively use Runes, unlike you. Remember, Chen is about his creeps.

373 By Crash and Burn 2009-12-12

@Nikolas21: Your Chen is paper. No creeps also mean no disables, except for Penitence. Also, the DPS build that you suggest is not as effective as a hybrid DPS-Support build (Stygian-Guinsoo). Aghanim's is definitely good, but Orchid is very situational. I'd rather spend money on a Guinsoo. Your Chen is good for low-level play, where damage dealing is given highest priority, rather than disabling. As for laning being better than jungling, I beg to differ. Jungling gives your team an early...

372 By Nikolas21 2009-12-11

...then get a nice pair of Power Treads and try to get gold for aghanim's[point booster(1200g),Staff of Wizardry(1000g),Ogre Axe(1000g),Aghanim's Scepter recipe scroll(1100g). Of course this is just my guide,it is up to u how u will play him

e.g. sorry for not speaking english so well I'm 14 and I'm heading for Proficenncy next year.

371 By Nikolas21 2009-12-11

And now let me explain my guide.

In the beginning sobi mask will provide mana while tangoes hp and Ironwood branch stats.(I'm refering in an ap/sd/rd/ 5v5 game) Also heading mid is better than woods(I think cos you'll get more creep kills and denies both). When u get 500g buy ur Boots of Speed and continue collecting gold for malevolance.U have already the sobi mask
required for Oblivion Staff so get 2*Sobi mask(650g)3*Robe of the Magi(1350g)3*Quarterstaff(2700g)and at last MALEVOLANCE(5025g)..
