Now onto the guide, so without further ado I present Rylai Crestfall, The Crystal Maiden

Base Stats:

Rylai Crestfall - The Crystal Maiden

  • Team player
  • 1 Disable
  • 3 Slows
  • Good int gain of 2.9 per lvl
  • 600 Range
  • Global aura
  • Hot (no game relevance but still important [unless you trick your opponent into repeatedly checking her out])

  • Slow ms of 280
  • Low base hp
  • Low base str gain of 1.7 per lvl
  • Low base dmg
  • Slow attack and casting animation
  • Slow projectile speed

OMG DPS!!!! If you said dps, please kill yourself now, I will nominate you for a Darwin Award.  The correct answer is Support, possibly with some Caster thrown in there.  Why you may ask? It’s all about hero aura.  Her aura helps her allies even when she isn’t there.  Additionally, she has disables and slows, letting her gank instead of farming.

Skills and Usage

Crystal Nova
  Crystal Nova

  • Casting range of 700 (shown below)
  • Aoe of 400 (shown below)
  • Target takes both target damage and nova damage
  • Slow is not removable by Purge
  • Deals magical damage
    • Reduced by magical resistance
    • Blocked by spell immunity
  • 30% ms decrease and 20% attack speed decrease
    • Lasts for 5 seconds

Crystal Nova is an aoe damage and slow.  Since you will only have 1 lvl of it in early game, it will be mainly used for the slow, casting it on escaping heroes or after Frost bite had ended.  Since it is aoe, in team clashes you should cast it where the heroes are grouped together, so that you will slow as many people as possible.

  • Casting Range of 500
  • Blockable by Linken’s Sphere
  • Can be Purged off
  • Deals magical damage
    • Reduced by magical resistance
    • Blocked by spell immunity
  • Interrupts current animation, including
    • Casting of Spells
    • Channeling Spells
    • Attack Animation
    • Movement
  • Units can cast spells except for
    • Blink skills
    • Metamorphosis skills
  • Units can cast WW or Invis spells, but they will still be visible while Frostbitten
  • Lasts for 1.5/2/2.5/3 sec on heroes and lvl 6 neutral creeps
  • Lasts for 10 seconds on all other units (except ancients)
  • Damage is dealt at the beginning of a one second interval with the first damage being dealt instantly when the target is affected by Frostbite.
  • This means that between level 1 and 2 of Frostbite there is no change to the damage, the same thing occurs between level 3 and 4. Both level one of Frostbite and level 2 will deal 140 damage while both level 3 and level 4 will deal 210 damage.

Reread the last 2 bullets.  Due to the way that damage is dealt (at the start of every second), you actually do more damage at lvls 1 and 3 then you would think.  Also, something very important to note is that when you cast Frostbite on an Orbwalker such as Drow, they can cast their orbs on you manually.  Let me repeat that in bold.  When you cast Frostbite on an Orbwalker, they can manually cast their orbs on you.  Important to remember if you are low on health and don’t think they can attack you.  However, if they have their orb autocast, it will stop them from attacking.  They need to manually cast the orb (as in click the letter and click on you).

Frostbite is useful for two reasons.  First, it stops people from attacking.  Two, it stops people from moving.  When you are ganking heroes, use Frostbite to stop them from moving so that you can kill the hero.  In team clashes, you will want to cast Frostbite on the dps carry hero who needs to attack to deal damage.

Brilliance Aura

Brilliance Aura
6.55 * Improved Crystal Maiden's Brilliance Aura a bit
This skill is what makes Rylai a good team player, as long as you are alive your teammates are regenerating mana.  So even if you go afk during a game (not suggested btw), you are still contribute (albeit not as much as you could be XD).  If you are dead, your allies will not get your aura bonus.
6.60 *Lowered Brilliance Aura (0.75/1.5/2.25/3->0.5/1/1.5/2)
Unfortunately, the Frog thought that this level of the aura was too imba and so it was nerfed.  However, in it's current state it still more than doubles most heroes' mana regen in the early game, which definitely has an effect on the game.

  • Global aura
  • Stacks with RoB aura
  • Not active when you are dead

Freezing Field

Freezing Field

  • Slows 30% ms and 20% attack speed
    • Applied every 0.1 sec to units in the radius of 635
  • Explosions
    • Occur every 0.1 seconds
    • Location is randomly decided
      • Range
      • Angle
    • Rotates Quadrant, starting with the top left and going clockwise
    • Explosions are frost novas with 190 aoe
    • Can only be hit by 20 explosions

As you can see in the pictures, the snow flurries that you see are simply animation.  They don’t do anything for the spell and have no relevance.  They do make it harder to see though which helps you (they can’t cast stuff on you as easily).  The explosions that occur are actually invisible.  You don’t see them while they happen.  After the explosion though, you will see ice projectiles falling to the ground.  The locations that these fall to is where the explosions took place.

Frostbite at lvl 1 is the most useful spell.  It disables the enemy and sets up allies to better chain spells (such as Lina and Light Strike Array).  In the event of a gank, it can trap an enemy hero near your tower or stop them from catching you if you try to run away.  A level of Crystal Nova is taken at lvl 2 for the slow, increasing your chance of getting a first blood kill.  Chaining Frostbite and Crystal Nova lets you attack a hero many times.  Brilliance Aura is maxed out next as that will help your team in early and mid game.  You could argue that maxing Frostbit and Nova would allow Rylai to be a powerful caster in the early levels, and that would be true.  However, following this build you would be playing a support role.  Getting your aura at an early level allows your team mates to cast their spells more.  This gives them better lane control and allows them to deal more damage to the enemy, forcing them to retreat or die.  Frostbite is maxed next as it is her best disable, very useful in ganks.

Why Frostbite at lvl 1 instead of Crystal Nova?

As a personal preference, I find Frostbite to be more useful at lvl 1 than Crystal Nova.  The fact that it stops movement allows for combos to be better set up.  Another reason I like Frostbite is that it has a 10 sec cd (compared to the 15 sec cd of Nova).  This means that in early chases you are more likely to cast it twice, allowing for more attacks, allies to catch up, and more damage to be done in general.

At lvl 6, Rylai has around 460 mana. Her ult costs 300.  That means you will only be able to cast 1 spell and Freezing Field.  I would rather cast Frostbite and Frost Nova, twice each.  This would allow you to attack as well as disable the enemy more.  To avoid Field they just need to walk out of the range, but they can’t avoid Bite and Nova.

You can get Brilliance Aura at lvl 1.  That way your allies can spam their single spell which will deal at most 75 damage (magic resistance).  Oh, and they can do this for about 2 creep waves before you level up (unless you are playing em in which case you are level 5 by the end of the first creep wave).  By getting aura at later levels (3-5), your allies will have multiple skills (so they can combo enemies) and the skills will do more damage, so spamming them will actually do real damage.

That being said, there are 2 heroes who if you had on your team I would consider getting Aura at lvl 1 for.

Squee and Spleen - The Goblin Techies

First is Techies. If he gets a tp scroll and starts mining as soon as possible in a lane (like a side shop or something).  Having your aura in addition to his clarity potions would allow him to place a mine almost every time the cooldown is over, so he could place lots of mines fast and get an easy First Blood.

Rigwarl - The Bristleback

The second hero is Rigwarl. (Icon)  If he gets Quill Spray at level 1, he can follow the enemy a bit while spamming quill spray.  This will add up to significant damage (5 sprays in a row does 400 damage, now don’t tell me that won’t hurt a hero).  And since you have Rylai’s aura, that will allow to regen mana much faster so you can chain quill sprays again much easier, establishing lane control and causing the enemy to die or go back to the fountain to heal.

This build focuses on a support style Rylai.  Leveling up Field requires more mana, and if you are spamming Frostbite and Crystal Nova a lot, you won’t always have that 500 mana to cast lvl 3 in addition to other spells.  Additionally, since the support build also involves a lot of ganking, the extra Stats that you get from not lvling up Field will help you survive in ganks.

You could argue that it does indeed do more damage as you level it up.  However, it is easy to avoid and very easy to stop.  If you are playing against opponents who are at least decent, you will get stunned or disabled within a second of casting Field.  So if you are just going to get disabled and stop the channeling, why waste 500 mana, why not only 300?

The entire point (imo) of getting Crystal Nova is for the slow.  This slow is the same at all levels.  Leveling it up will only increase the damage.  However, this increases the dmg/mana only by a small bit.  It does increase the mana cost significantly though, meaning that you will be able to cast less spells.  Therefore, Crystal Nova is left at lvl 1 since it will still slow the same amount but will allow you to cast more spells and help the team more.  Also the stats you get help help you survive.

Now, I do not expect you to follow my skill build exactly.  People have their own play styles.  This is mine.  If you want to level up Crystal Nova and Freezing Field and it helps you get more kills, then go for it.  Play how you like and the way you are used to.

Alternative Skill Build

  1. Frostbite
  2. Brilliance Aura
  3. Brilliance Aura
  4. Crystal Nova

This alternative skill build is only slightly different in the first four lvls.  Frostbite is gotten at lvl 1 for reasons stated above.  The difference is that Brilliance Aura is gotten at lvl 2 and 3 and then Nova is gotten at 4.

What makes this build better than the other one?

The entire point of getting Aura at lvl 2 and 3 is that it will allow your allies to spam spells a lot at lvls 2 and 3.  When you have a dual lane with double nukes or stuns (like Sven Lesh or DK Lina or something similar), having that extra mana regen allows your team to combo the enemy lane much more and get more kills.  Even if you don’t kill, it will force the enemy to go back to the fountain to heal and gives you lane control.

If you don’t see the pattern yet, the entire point of getting Brilliance Aura is that it gives your entire team an early advantage both in laning and getting kills.  In the current competitive metagame, ganking is really important and the thing that determines which team wins is who has better gankers and not who has better farming late gamers.  This is why Kunkka is a good choice since he can gank well and farms fast with Tidebringer.  Brilliance Aura is the reason that Rylai is either banned or first picked in leagues and it is directly a result of her buff in 6.55 where her aura was buffed to provide more mana regen.

Animation Canceling

A must with Rylai.  Her animation is really long.  Check it out in the following vids:

Attack Animation

Casting Animation

See, her casting and attack animations are long.  But you don’t need to watch all of it (you can, it’s just you could be doing other things).  After the casting point when the spell takes effect, anything you do is unnecessary.  The spell has already been cast.  The casting point is shown in this next picture.

Now go back and watch the casting animation video over again.  See how early this happens, almost at the beginning.  That means that about 80% of the animation is unnecessary.  With that you could cast another spell or two, attack a few times, and use some items (well maybe not all that but you get my point, it takes 5 times as long to sit through the animation).  Just a little example, check out the following video of a friend and I messing around and me animation canceling as Rylai.  Yes it was staged, yes it was in Test mode, but it shows what it is supposed to.  Watch how I issue a move command and remove all the extra animation.

Animation Canceling

Shift Queuing

While on the topic of animation and trying to speed combos up, you might think of using shift queuing.  While this is generally a good idea and really helpful, it is not always the best choice for Rylai.  Any shift queuing that has Rylai use a spell is bad.  You will watch all the animation before the next command is implemented.  It is better to cast the spell, cancel it, and the issue the next command.  This only applies to spells.  You can (and probably should if you can) shift queue actions such as:

  • TP into a Blink Dagger into a Freezing Field (or another spell, which you then cancel)
  • Eat a tango and continue running (from an enemy)

Item Build

  1. Chicken
  2. Ironwood Branches
  3. Tangoes
  4. Observer Wards
  5. TP Scroll
  6. Magic Wand
  7. Power Treads
  8. Bracers

So few things? Yes, but only because Rylai is versatile and can change to what the team needs.  Since Rylai is a support hero, she will be the hero buying wards for map control.  She can also start out with a chicken in early game for the team to use.  TP Scrolls are good to have in case you need to escape from a gank quickly.  However, since you won’t be content with that build, here are some other items that you would consider getting:

Boots: Phase Boots vs Power Treads vs Boots of Travel
In their current forms, any of the boots will work.  Phase Boots are nice since they are cheap and provide the phase ability useful for chasing and ganking.  However, it gives the lowest base move speed, which only brings Rylai up to a base ms of 340.  Power Treads are nice since they are the cheapest boots, can provide either 10 str or 10 int depending on what you need, and give a nice ms bonus bringing Rylai up to 350.  Boots of Travel are the most expensive boots, but they give the largest ms bonus bringin Rylai up to 370.  In addition the TP skill means that a TP scroll doesn't take up an extra item slot.  It is hard to farm up the 2200 gold for the recipe though.  My personal preference is Str Treads, although if I am having a good early game I would consider saving up for Boots of Travel.

Survival: Bracers vs Nulls vs Vanguard vs BKB
Bracers and Nulls are more or less the same thing, just that Bracers give more str and Nulls give more Int.  Since this is more a support build and you will be spamming Frostbite and Frost Nova, it might be more helpful to get Null Talismans so that you have a larger mana pool.  Bracers are more for those people who aren’t as confident of themselves, the extra hp you get lets you take more damage, possible allowing you to escape with hp left.  Vanguard works, gives hp regen, hp, and damage block.  However, this build is a support Rylai, so she won’t be farming much.  Thus it would be somewhat hard for her to get a Vanguard, saving up for the expensive pieces.  It’s not bad, just Bracers and Nulls give stats that gives hp while Vanguard only gives pure hp.  BKB imo counts as survival since it gives your str.  It would also fall into the higher tier item section since Rylai would need to farm a bit for it.  It gives some good str and it also gives the Avatar ability which helps survival in another, really good way.  However, the BKB is really situtational.  A bunch of hero ults go through it, so you need to analyze the other team and decide whether it would help at all or is a waste of money.  I personally get 2-3 Bracers depending on what else I’m holding in my inventory.

High Tier Item: BKB vs Mekansm vs Guinsoo
BKB gives you some survival, as well as giving you the Avatar ability which will help you cast all of your spells and not get disabled.  Make sure to know that it will protect you from the disables that the enemy team has.  Mekansm provides a hp regen aura, gives stats, and provides an active aoe heal.  It’s composed of small pieces and it pretty cheap as well.  Guinsoo provides Hex, which is a great disable.  It is much more expensive though and would take some farming.  I usually get Mekansm and then try to get a Guinsoo for late game.

There is a good reason for not getting Aghanim’s Scepter.  If the enemy you are playing against has any kind of skill, you will be disabled within a second of casting Freezing Field.  Thus, getting an item to make it more powerful, even though you won’t be able to use it very much, is a waste of gold.  Sure, it does give you hp and mana, but a Bloodstone will give you that as well for a cheaper price and better effects.  The only time I would ever consider getting this on Rylai is if the enemy has no disables at all.  But this only happens in pubs and if they don’t have the knowledge to get disables then you will win easily.

Why? For the slow? You already have 2/3 of those.  For the damage? You already have 3 nukes? For the mana? Anything else with a Mystic Staff gives enough.  Armor? Easily bought.  Aura? Can be useful, but for the price you are paying it isn’t worth it.  Basically, anything that Shivas can do Guinsoo can do better.

Mobility: Dagger

If you know how to use Dagger, it can be really useful.  It can let you position your ult, escape ganks in conjunction with juking.  It helps in chasing and just traveling around faster.  All for the low price of 2k.  Definitely worth a consideration, but only if you know how to use it.

Gameplay (How to actually play)

Choosing Heroes

If you are thinking about choosing Rylai and maxing aura early, you should left your allies know, especially before they pick heroes.  This way your allies will pick heroes who can capitalize on the extra mana regen they will have.  If you end up randoming Rylai, then let your allies know as soon as possible so they can choose accordingly.

Starting Items

Animal CourierIronwood BranchIronwood BranchIronwood BranchIronwood BranchIronwood Branch and Healing Salve or Ancient Tango of Essifation
Chicken + 5 Branches + 1 Tango = 555 gold

Since you are a support hero, you can afford to buy the chicken at the start of the game, make sure to let your allies have control and if they want (I normally ask, and some don’t want control).  While you can buy other stat items like Circlets or Gauntlets or Mantles, 5 Branches gives you the best total stat gain for your starting gold and you will still have money to buy some hp regen items.  You can choose to buy a Healing Slave instead of a Tango if that is your playstyle.  I personally like Tangoes since they don’t dispel under attack meaning that I can still last hit and deny in the lane without worrying about loosing the regen.

Fwii~ made a thread about it, find it here

It’s better to start out with more stats and regen.  Besides, you have a chicken which can bring you a TP scroll or you could buy one at a side shop if you are in that lane.

Lane Choice

Since Rylai is ranged, she can choose any lane to go to.  Also, since she isn’t a carry and doesn’t need to reach lvl 6 as fast as possible, she doesn’t need to solo.  And while she could use runes, there are much better heroes for abusing the runes, meaning she doesn’t have to be mid.  With this is mind, choose a lane based on who your partner will be and who you think the enemy will be.  If you think an enemy Razor will be Sent Bot and you want to harass him a lot so he doesn’t farm, then you can lane bot.  Rylai is versatile so she can be anywhere.

Lane Partners

While Aura Rylai falls into the support category, she is not the stereotypical support.  She doesn’t have skills that allow her to babysit the carry.  Instead she helps the entire team wherever she is.  Thus, you don’t need to lane Rylai with the carry.  Instead you should lane her with another hero with which she can combo.  Since Rylai has 2 spells which affect the enemy’s move speed, laning her with a hero which requires timing, such as Leshrac or Lina would allow her lane partner to land their spells and chain disable a hero for a kill.  Another good lane situation is to lane her with an ally which has large damage early game.  With her 2 spells, Rylai can slow the enemy and your ally can hit the enemy a lot of times for large amounts of damage.  So some good allies:
Lina Inverse - The SlayerLeshrac - The Tormented SoulKunkka - Admiral ProudmooreYurnero - The JuggernautAlleria - WindrunnerKnight Davion - The Dragon Knight

Krobelus - The Death ProphetPugna - The OblivionSlardar - The Slithereen GuardVol`Jin - The Witch DoctorAzgalor - Pit LordPudge - The Butcher

Creep Blocking

Caspian’s Guide to Creep Blocking

Creep blocking is useful to set up lvl 1 FB ganks.  Blocking the creeps moves the meeting point closer to you so it is easier for your ally to come from the side for a FB gank.

Lane Control and Harassing

These two topics go hand in hand.  If you harass the enemy so they can’t do very much, then you are establishing lane control.  If you let them do that then they have lane control (which is a bad thing).  Since you are getting aura for early game, you and your allies will have lots of mana to cast spells, which you should do.  Whenever you have full mana, cast a Frostbite on an enemy, it’s as easy as that.  Since you are regenerating mana be sure to use it.  If you are planning on comboing a hero soon then you should save mana and get a kill.  But if you aren’t then spam spells and damage the enemy.  They take damage and will need to heal or will die.

Another way to harass is to manually attack a hero.  Since Rylai has 600 range it is easy for her to attack every now and then when the hero tries to last hit or deny.  This works very well against melee heroes and can also work against ranged heroes.  This will create breathing room making it easier for the carry to farm and for you to deny.  And if the enemy doesn't take the hint then you and your ally can get some kills.

Comboing Heroes

When you and your lane partner (or a ganker) decide to kill an enemy hero, establish in what order you will cast your spells and who will start.  That way you will chain your disables and get the most time disabled out of it.  For heroes who require timing like Lina or Lesh, have Rylai start out with Frostbite to stop the hero from moving, making the hero easy to target.

Last Hitting and Denying

If you are laned with a carry, then you should let the carry last hit while you deny.  Rylai doesn’t have an expensive build so you don’t need lots of gold early game.  Denying with Rylai will be somewhat hard.  Her animation and projectile speed are slow, so you will need to practice the timing.  However, with practice it will be possible.  If you are laned with another caster, then feel free to last hit and deny as they don’t need lots of gold as well.

Attack Stuttering

For the more skilled player, attack stuttering is a viable strategy.  Since Rylai has a long animation, you might as well use it to your advantage.  For more info check out this thread by Boots-chan.

Map Awareness and Ganking/Escaping

These also go hand in hand.  Knowing where the enemy is at all times can let you know what the enemy is planning.  As a ward whore, Rylai will be buying wards for the team.  Putting these wards up will help your team play safe and also maintain map control (like lane control but for the map).  To find out some good places to set up wards, check out Caspian’s Ward Guide found here.

With good warding, you will know where the enemy is and what they are doing.  With this knowledge, your gankers know where and when to go to get an easy kill.  If you ward the enemy jungle, you can see who is neutraling and when that Troll has 100 hp left, easy target.  In the early game, Rylai only has here 2 spells, neither of which deal significant damage.  Thus, ganking is better left to those with more high powered nukes.

If you do happen to find yourself on the wrong side of a gank, there are a few things that you can do.  First off, you have 2 spells that can let you escape.  Frostbite will stop and enemy from moving and Crystal Nova will slow the enemy, allowing you to run faster than them and escape.  Depending on where and how you are being ganked, you could lure the enemy to the tower where you can Frostbite or Nova them and let the tower kill them.  Last and possibly the best is juking, the technique of using the fog of war and mind games to escape.  You can find out more in the following guide by Katzkie found here.

Creep Pulling

You can only perform this on the Sent Bot and Scourge Top lanes due to the lane structures.  At a competitive level, this is usually done and it is common for the enemy to ward this camp so that you cannot do it.  This technique will ensure the battle stays closer to your tower for increased safety.  Additionally it lets your lane have an extra source of exp and gold to level faster.  Check out AsianSensation’s Razor guide (found here) for a gif example of creep pulling.

Goal of Early Game

Survive and level up.  You want to get to lvl 7 so that your allies can get superb mana regen due to your aura.  Some kills early game would be nice but you shouldn’t rush a First Blood or play really, really aggressively and risky.  Play smart.

It seems like it’s time for a picture, so here you go.  Enjoy!

@ the guy below me.
bite first because its a snare and it even scales with level. Nova's slow doesnt scale with level. So leveling Frostbite first is a no brainer.

224 By kensin00 2010-01-10

why bite?
get first nova, then level up bite..

coz bite only have 1.5 sec of immobilation that cost 115 mana at level 1
while nova have 5 sec decreasing aspd and ms + aoe with only 100 mana...

so i prefer having nova at level 1 then bite at level 4...

nc guide tho..

This guide is not meant for PUBS. Pure support Rylai build isnt viable with ppl you dont trust.

Rylai does not need Aghaim or BKB to be useful or contribute to the team. They are a waste of money. Mek is great if the team doesnt already have one, and Rylai is a great mek carrier.

Pathetic guide

meka on crystal is a shame

BKB is very core for her. She has very less HP. BKB = survival with or without ultimate.

sucks if u ask me..

213 By migrees 2009-12-07

@first galia post.

Read -.-. Frostbite deals damage at the START of every second, so fole's info is correct. Shackles is what you are talking about I think.

@z1mp first comment:....................

And at below: He's a flying unit during firefly, but that shouldn't affect the uusage of the skill. I'll get back to you on that.

212 By kaitokid777 2009-12-07
