Nice guide, pics are always good, but I would kinda object to the skill build... Battle Hunger is a very sweet killing tool, it does 625 damage at lvl4, but the thing is getting it at lvl10 means they can just attack something to lose it - very easily. Maxing Counter Helix isn't great since the skill points only add 25 damage each - get one level of it though, you still need it... I'm not that great with Axe though. On the other hand, I have never seen Manta Style on Axe - ever. Debatable, rate after more comments.

Why get Manta?

Manta on axe is just based on the concept where they think that more Axes = more helixes. Unfortunately that's not the case, YOU WANT THEM TO FOCUS ON YOU TO MAKE MORE HELIXES. Sure images can perform helix but they are not as hardy as the real hero since most of Axe tanking power comes from berzerker's call's amour bonus.

I got the manta style idea from a friend of mine but I didnt use it to see how effective it was, so sorry for including it.

2 Stout shields work wonders with Axe early game...just go "bezerk" and you'll get first blood at level 2 (with hunger)...

you're guide was very nice, i just recommend getting 3 stout shields first and save the vanguard for later. and i don't usually start off with berserker call, i go in, start off with some counter helixes, and when he starts to run i use BC to call him back. then blink BC if still alive.

axe never needed power threads since he does not need attack speed. 3 stout shields early can give you near creep-invulnerability, thus, the ability of tanking creeps and killing them because of counter helix.
i prefer this build instead.

you do not need berserker's call early game since it risks your life, well, except if you have some bracers and stout shields.

counter helix cannot activate consecutively in 0.4 seconds if i'm not mistaken. BUT axe's images does not follow that rule, making manta style a little good on axe, but still, i don't reccomend buying manta style.

your build is noobier. don't just call anyone noob unless you are supremely the greatest player in dota, or at least in DS. sange and yasha? axe never needed the attack speed. assault also is a waste of money. if you want armor, buy platemails or better yet blademails if your enemy is/are melee. battle fury and power treads? his DPS is in his skills, not normal attacks. don't make him a hero like mortred that has strong attacks. he's built to be a tanker-killer. just don't call anyone noob when you aren't sure your build/skills really pawn.

treads, satanic, battlefury and hyper are USELESS

radiance isn't a great choice because it gives you evasion... and it's the worst thing to Axe

i don't waste money with ring of basilus, blademail and bracer, but they can help

just go out of your base with 2 stout and some tangoo, upgrade them into vanguard.. then get a travel and tarrasque/bkb
it's enough to own melee heroes!
if your facing ranged heroes, get a blink... and if they are INT heroes, go for a hood too

An early Berzerker's call will never risk getting you killed since it gives a huge amour bonus.

most of PPL say it's not right, but battlehunger at the right time can make ur enemy to run away soon, so u can continue creeping without loosing HP

I do indeed like the pictures you used to show that you actually can play Axe well. But on the other hand that is a very inexpensive inventory (main one) and you should include turning RoB into Vlad's.

Well ur skill build needs some work, seems almost random after lvl 6. Items need adjusting too.

i agree with the first 2 mistakes but i disagree wtih battle hunger. you are counting on the helixes to do enough damage so you can finish off with battle hunger, who says the enemies gonna be near enough to get affected by the helixes all the time? you need BC to make them keep on fighting you or else they'll just run away before you can do any damage.

the manta build is a little strange... i doubt it would be as effective... but first build is not bad at all... might want to replace the ring of basillus with a vladmir's offering which would be helpful ^ ^...

every1 thinks that axe is good against abaddon... they are wrong i played against a axe 1 on 1 bot lane and we fought alot i killed him 4 times and he quit

Not a bad strat, but I think you overestimate the early-game usefulness of Bezerker's Call and underestimate the usefulness of Battle Hunger. Against decent opponents, you will never get a Bezerker's Call off on them AND a wave of creeps without extra help. However, you will always be able to Battle Hunger them then attack them. The damage that Battle Hunger does is huge early-game, you should play Axe a little more and experiment with it.

Also, I think you don't focus enough on the Dagger of Escape. This item is absolutely crucial in mid-game because it lets you use Bezerker's Call exactly WHERE you want it.

Finally, I don't know why there isn't room for a HoD in your optional item build. If you rush it with Vanguard, you're near impossible to kill for any magic-user.

item build does not really need blade mail, but axe needs hp to be a tank so he should go with heart first, and the last item slot should be an ac. get blademail only if there are a lot of melee opponents.

Good Guide but the only thing i am sceptical about is that in the begging game battle hunger will also make the heros have to go and heal/use tangos...i see why you would do the berserk call though....GOOD GUID /w PICKS

Overall nice guide; you have point out most of the roles and common tactics of Axe. Although i have to admit that the skill build is not as good. fwii & Shimrra_3 had mentioned it, and only get 1lvl of helix is the way to go. Max out Hunger & Berseker first.
And for the item build, same as what fwii had said. Get Travel instead of treads. No need damage items or lifesteal items for Axe, all he need is HP and defense. That's why HoT and Vanguard is a great item combo on Axe.

Good guide. Never knew that about Manta...that makes things more interesting.

You didn't emphasize that early game, you need TWO stout shields to own. Once you do, you can own just about anyone. Hunger will guarantee a dead hero. Else, they starve at the fringes.

Usually, I get 2 HoTs, Vanguard, 2 Blademails, and BoT by end game. If opponents are not melee, replace blademails with Assault and MKB.

I agree with most of the comments as well. Hunger + Helix = Dead Hero early game. My skill build is almost exactly like Unholy's.

You also did not mention Axe's weaknesses. He's not very good against certain heroes, mainly DPS range, or heavy permabash/lifesteal combos.

All in all, a good guide for what I think is the best tank in the game.

really nice guide! great explanations and screenshots. if i may recommend my build, i max out battle hunger FIRST, and head to my lane at start with 3 clarity potions. it's AWESOME tool for discouraging enemy heros - hit them a couple of times, then battle hunger, they will be red health already and forced for a run back to the fountain, missing the xp and giving u a level advantage. oh, and thx for the idea about the dagger. it rocks!! just dagger next to an enemy hero and his own creeps, taunt everything on to you and whoosh hero is almost dead. thx again 10/10.

Great strategy! The only query I have is if battle hunger has much use that late in the game... If a hero is going to die from it, he'll surely go and kill a neutral creep to save himself (which is much easier at the mid-game than at the early-game)...

Either way, the rest was good so I'll rate 9/10.

sorta weird, seeing as you get power treads and you even mention a hyperstone? axe imo never gets dps. u'll heardly ever get to attack because counter helixes get in the way. so get BoT. also, its good to max out battle hunger in the begginning because its really good to spam, and berserkers call is useless early. my build is

good guide. . . but i think battle hunger is needed to be maxed in the first part cuz enemy's hp is still low at first right? and in lane, if you're sentinel, go to lower lane cuz there's only 1 nest of neutral creep there and we all know we can't kill it yet at first. same thing with scourge but only at top. . . 1 creep nest at their side so it's easier to hunger kill. . . and by the way in items, i guess dagger's good for ulti, but i prefer increasing axe's armor or building a lifesteal item. . . peace. . . nice guide. . . ^_^

I asking how about in the late 5 5 game and what should i do by using axe because we must facing 5 hero and don't have any skill to harras them. i have dagger, taras, battlefury, power threads and 2 bracers. i blink to them and cast berseker call but i die in 1 sec. Please help me?

You tell your team to charge when you give the signal, then you blink in and berzerker's call. You won't die that quickly, you problably last 10 seconds dealing over 1000 damage to the opposing team. If your allies come and help you before 10 seconds then good for you your gonna live, but if they don't then feel free to call your team noob for not making use of your disable.

counter helix has only a 15% chance to trigger, so there is no need to max it until mid/late game, in my opinion, max battle hunger and beserker's call, and add in some blade mails.

This is a very nice guide indeed. On the other hand if someone is to use battle hunger at an early stage, which imo is good cause it will make it much easier to get a kill in the 1st lvls and therefore money, skills should go like this:

1 Battle Hunger
2 Bersek Call
3 Counter Helix
4 B H
5 B C
6 C B THIS IS A MUST
7 B H
8 B C
9 B H
10 B C

then fill the Counter Helix skill
Then all stats

Why i say this, because B/H will definately give u some early kills and therefore money and higher lvls at the early stage and B/C cause well...this is what the hero is all about. As for the C/H well the difference between 1st and last upgrade is 75 points of damage, not bad, but not great either.

as many people have said, u should max battle hunger first, it is a great skill at lvl 7, also u shouldnt have to max counter helix early becuase u only gain 25 damage per level, so first max battle hunger with 1 counter helix, then i usually switch off between berserker call and counter helix and get culling at 6/11/16

Don't get Berserkers call early, merely attacking the hero will trigger creep aggression. Get hunger instead. Attack him when he has many creeps, if the enemy is smart he'll run away the moment you get close to him. If he doesn't run away you attack him while his creeps and him attack you, when either of your health bars get low battle hunger him then bug out. Stay with the creeps, deny him any last hits. Also effective for farming, if helix procs enough. This is the reason why axe is a lane control freak especially early on.

I agree with ur early game build, the rest of the guide if good too. Ppl think Battle hunger is so uber early game, but not really, B.call is better imo, to survive the B-hunger its just to use a Tango the u survive.

A few comments . I think it is unnecessary
to get kelens. You should instead get 2 vanguards.That would make you a tanking axe along with HoT.No one will be able to kill you. Take away basillus.

Skill build i would max out my battle hunger in early game and spam it on heroes as it is very useful in early games.If you use it in mid game when your opponents all get their items.Your battle hunger will be useless against their items with regeneration.So it does very little dmg.So you might as well use battle hunger in the early game and get kills.So max battle hunger early on.I got dominating with axe before lvl 6.

Great Guide! Excatly the same as mine but except for the threads and the ring. My built was base on the HP and armor (vanguard, blade mails, HoT) not on the damage cause i usually rely on the helix. I can take down 3 heros by this build.

2 stout tangoos and RoH early game is enought and if my opponent is ranged i priorities battle hunger to harrass and deny all my creeps like crazy.if its melee i go for berserker's call cause you can easily move and harrass him using berserker's call.

Assault cuirass does not only provide armor. It increases attack speed. Which means more chances of counter helix. Well, talk about noobs advising me..Haha...

Get assault cuirass and see the power of counter helix. I never attack the enemy. I just run around him, letting him attack me. Every 1/2sc, Axe throws a counter helix. Try this and you'll be amazed.Its just not armour, my friend. Increase attack speed means increase in frequency of counter helix.

I would never think of getting manta until mid/late, and if you're going to go that route, don't forget to purge the hell outta shit so u get uber kills.
I'm currently trying this.
1 chicken, 1 stout, 1 clearwater.
middle lane (scourge), always creep the 3 lvl 2 creepspawn, pull them to your tower. BC your enemies and run back to your tower. it will fuck up the creepwaves lol

2x stout into 1x vanguard and sell extra stout when running out of room
BLOODSTONE (6.45 added life/mana regen increase with each kill, with this u can go crazy spamming)
blink dagger
2x heart
manta/radiance (radiance only adds 8% evasion, which wont affect counter helix's performance that much)

i luv this guy, in early game ill usually get berserk call and the counter helix as quickly as possible and when lvl 6 while luring for a kill make sure ur filled with ur opponent and his creeps so tht ull get a hell lotta counter helix(s) then do axe. The items ill get is mainly power treads, vanguard, assault cuirass, battle fury and ill be unstoppable

i can kill anyone as low as level 2 using axe. just get counter helix and berserker's call.its simple.when facing an enemy, attack him!nowhe will probably think that he will kill you because the creeps will come to his rescue.wrong!the more creeps, the better chance to activate your helix.he'll be surprised that a big chunk of his life is already gone and he will start to back away, then this is the time you use berserker's call, attracting him and more creeps (if there is a second wave coming). i usually get first blood this way.

how could you determine what is right or what is wrong with a character that has good skills?

cmon dont judge sooo much! manta is good when you are fighting skeleton king/luna moonfang/ r anyone that relies on mana for their skills... also purge helps alot and is sync with your ulti...

although manta is an unconventional thing to buy for axe since you will not face leoric all the time... so just focus on being what axe does best and that is to tank as much damage as possible...

also the blademail is only good for melee heroes so pick your things according to the opponent...

i usually go for 2 vanguards then BOT and kelen... if you manage to produce this items you will own every single agi/int hero... just dont be too greedy tanking a tower at all levels! or unless you have upgraded to 2 vanguards and a HoT..

pick your items as well as what skills you max first depending on your opponents...

gave it 8/10... that naix is so AI... but the missing points are for prioritizing not so important items... RoB is a waste that's right... unless you upgrade it to vlads but thats an item you could erase from this hero's shopping list... such a bother...

Well I can say that axe is my fav hero, Im so good in using it I can even have a triple kill in level 2!!!!!! Yeah believe it dude!!!!! U juz hav to play like a noob, keep on attacking and if sg rulez is allowed, damn u must be godlike in level 4, for those pros u know wat i mean ryt!!!? Helix is so good in early levels but in late its useless, Ur equip r gud and battle really helps, Y settle as a disabler in late game while u can continue ur "holy shit" in late game?? Well its my oipnion.

Has anyone ever thought of trying Mjollnir? Would the static buff work good with the counter helix?

I think people should go try out the strat and comment only after they try it.. Dont assume that your strat is better, go try it out.. no harm trying.. Its really useful for me, thanks alot.

I the guide , but I would mantion that battle hunger does most of my early game kills 5-20 min . It's good to harras when getting a ring of basilus.
