VERY informative and thorough. i give it a 9/10. would be 10/10 if you could help explain her early game gank tactics and "deny tactics" with some pictures. the explanation confused me somewhat.

Lothars bonuses aren't really that awesome that you should get it over blink. Eclipse is a devestating ulti and a good team would gladly buy a gem if they notice that your're building up lothars. Another note is Butterfly is > Curass. Anyway this guide gets a t-up from me.

Great guide. i love it but maybe you dont really need lothars edge. my favourite tactic is too simply attack the hero once and start to run away. Normally people will come after you thinking you're weak but you're simply luring them into empty space where you can proc your ulti and beam once more and he's dead.

You couldn't've nailed the advantages of Lothar's better - besides the bonuses, Blink takes lots of time to activate whereas Lothar's doesn't. Overall very good. Waiting on more comments as usual.

This is strange, but lifesteal actually works on luna. And your item includes buriza. Good if you prefer killer build, but buriza will interfere with glaives once it triggers, much like how it interferes with medusa's split shot. Skadi, Butterfly and Radiance are already powerful enough to kill, and you already have a handy nuke. Overall ok except for the lifesteal and buriza.

ARE YOU INSANE. SKADI'S ORB EFFECT JUST LIKE UR PASSIVE. THE GAME ITSELF TELLS YOU NOT TO GET THESE KIND OF ITEMS.
And there's absolutelu no reason to go
for buriza. Aghanim tanks her and IMPROVES HER ULTI,Blink, PT/BoT and later on a Butterfly. That's good enough. IF U WANT TO BE A TEAPLAYER THEN GET AN ASSAULT OTHERWISE it's a complete waste since it does not work with synergy with her skills. Perhaps if u have the time and the gold go for radiance or divine if u have REALLY GOOD GOLD.Improving her damage directly
is good for her blessing.

I understand your concern about survivability but you're gonna need everything to help you on your extremely expensive items.

I mean, if you're already getting stats, then why get bracers? Go for the Wraith Bands, they offer AGI, 114 hp (if you get two) and +12 damage. Hey that helps A LOT for last hitting early game and the stats can be a filler for the extra hp that bracers supply.

Last, I still like Blink Dagger, but I read your reasons on why to get Lothars and I think they're ok.

A note on writing strats: visual aids are nice :) 'Twould be nice if you used more ability/item icons in the early/middle/late game sections.

Another thing is that in v6.44 Luna's ult no longer relies on Lucent Beam's level for damage, so you might want to reconsider that.

Well...i believe that you should list somewhere the items you got for each part of the game....
Also, about the two clicks for blink dagger...IT HAS A HOTKEY.....
depending on where did you put it it will be one of these numbers: (num pad) 1,2,4,5,7,8...
So you can use dagger (and lothar's for that matter) in a split second without wasting valuable time....
But other than that you detailed greatly how to maximize luna's efficiency, what her weaknesses are and how to overcome them, although it will require practice to get it right...
Like the skill build though...

i dont like this build i mean common thier isnt one item other than threads that costs less than 5000 and i dont care really about the and price but the single item prices that u have to get (eaglhorn+sacred relic+hyper ston +cuirass reicpe+demon edge) wtf no one can farm that i mean EoS alone takes to lvl 13 if ur opponents r worthy

First of all, well done for the strat. It's ver explanatory, but some screenies would be also good.
About your skill build, I really think you should reconsider. No matter how many bracers and stats you get early on, due to Luna's really short range, you are still very vulnerable, especially to nukes. For me the only way to go is maxing out first Lucent Beam and Moon glaive for the following reasons:
1)Lucent beam does awesome dmg for early game and can be cast from a rather long range
2)Moon glaive greatly increases your range. It's true it won't help you farm much early lvls due to the low damage, but will protect you from getting hits that will force you retreat to the fountain and will also allow you to harass the enemy hero from a safe distance making him easy prey for the ulti.

The item build is very good, but I would go for a preserverance at the cost of postponing butterfly, if viable. You should also prioritize buriza against skadi imo, with moon glaive a critical strikes 5 times killing a whole creep wave one-hit. Very good points for loathar's too, much better than Blink dagger.

*By saying "increases range" I mean that you are able to hit someone at a farther distance since the glaive travels from one creep to the other and probably to the hero.

Moon Glaives are ineffective for early game harrassing. Lets say your bae damage is around..maybe 45, (the max damage of Luna is 39) and ew assume you haev leveled up and gotten some minor damage items.

Assuming this is a ranged hero, (why would you need greater range if its a melee hero, he always comes up to hit creeps anyway) lets say it bounces maybe 2-3 times before it hits the hero. This results in a damage range of 12-18 dmg.

While over time this may amount to a big amount early game, if this si a decent enemy he/she will NOT allow you to continue auto attacking.

good strat but item not..me always buy dagger refresher bloodstone cuirass treads aghanim..i always get triple kill if my friends is akasha and blademaster..clearing out the creep, i dagger there, cast ulti twice, and blademaster omni..triple kill!!..huuahahaha..most people will got panic if u blink in and cast eclipse..but have u ever heard that eclipse bug?when hero that get impaled after hit by eclipse 4 times,they get hit again by eclipse..damage can be so crazy dude..

really are you sure theres an eclipse bug? what map version are you playing?

good guide. i suggest some pics having walls of text bore me as well as alot of people. your item build would make anyhero a killer even alchemist which sucks. try building her as an inteli because her real power comes from her spells i like to buy a blink dagger refresher orb and a scepter makes it so you can take on about 3 heros in a second.

despite popular misconceptions, glaives are great harrassers, at leat to low hp heros. even if each attack only deals 10 bounch damage, every attack over a period of time adds up. say you attack 25 times in a creep wave. if your enemy recieves that glaive for every attack, thats 250 damage.


caspain is right though, you really dont want glaive early game against most heros, due to your weak hp. 1 or 2 upgrades are enough for farming purposes

That Eclipse Impale thing sounds soooo funny! Um, does anyone know what the damage stats on Eclipse are, now that its been COUGH COUGH COUGH... 'fixed'... I can't play her anymore because I dunno how much it does, its annoying. From the comments between this and my previous comments, I give this guide a 10/10.

Lothars= Good for Hiding while using eclipse problem is you do get some Ms....so your gonna have to chase them while using eclipse which is a NO NO....

Recently tried that using clinks vs. Raigor,THUNDERSPIRIT and Luna moonfang

I used MKB and Bkb.......They all died......

the only orb effect that works properly for her is life steal. sange, maelstrom and stygian completely ruin her attack and skadi and diffusal dont activate - you dont slow or manaburn with them but you still have your bounces.

i think raigor is her best ally. his ulti clears creeps (the more the better) and her ulti clears heroes afterwards:)

You should include Magina in your worst enemies list. Because when he gets a HoD + Magic Warding ur pretty much screwed..anyway nice guide

I have a very noob question... what is denying ? I always heard people talking about denying but i never knew what it is.

uh.. actually my understanding about Moonfang is she'll always most likely kill her enemy heroes with her unlti.. well, that's not only what I think but also that's what I always see in dota games when there's a Moonfang hero. What they do and also what I do is we get dagger then that's it - you haunt the hero down until s/he will be alone then sneak to him/her blink beside and ulti... lothars is also effective but always counterable by gems or wards.. better dagger... I find dagger useful for Moonfang, not only for escaping but ofcourse for killing/haunting.. what about Aghanims? it strenghtens your unlti right? like more lucent beams are cast when eclipse.. like can triple kill low hp heroes..

Basically the act of killing your own units. Called denying because you deny them most of the exp a dying creep should give, as well as the chance to kill it for gold. One can attack his own creep if it is at below 50% HP(a+click).

hey cadogantan --- DENYING is when you kill your OWN(allied) creeps or destroy your OWN tower so that your enemies won't have a benefit from it like they won't have any experiences for their level and gold for their farming but you can only deny when your creep is dying like only when it's hp is very low (red life), same with the tower when it's nearly to be down... i think that's clear, so always try denying in your game huh?

i think u forgot luna's worst enemy...anti mage. everything about him spells trouble for luna
mana burn - she already has low mana, but for it to be burned... =.=
mana shield - wow, same as HoD
blink - this makes him a pain in the ass, he just blinks out of eclipse
mana void - not THAT bad considering u dont have THAT much mana

after i took alot of damage from meat hook and rot and dismember isurvived and since were in a hidden place without creeps I ECLIPSED HIM DEAD

LUNA CAN OWN BONE IIIIIIIIIIIIIFFF bone clinks bacstabs YOU then eclipse, (take note he just used his windwaklk for backstab so his dead)
and also lucent beam and dont forget, the enemy creeps they cut your eclpse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(just kill int or agi heroes avoid strength)

Even Mortred is nothing with luna's eclipse...

Blink strike then Eclpse and lucent beam and dont forget the enemy creeps

Refresher is a good item on her too..dont worry with her mana cause it will be just enough, for her kill...

That's actually a major reason for picking Lothar's Edge over it, since it just requires one click, less mana, offers bonuses, and even with a gem, your increased speed will let you get in place for ulti or escape. Nuff said.

3)Items ARE expensive. But between your hero killing and your bounces, you'll be massing tons of gold instantly. Believe me, after a point, money becomes no issue at all. Just try my build.

Deny as much as possible, especially in the early game, where everyone is building up. See, you only kill a unit that's going to die anyway. No different to a creep dying to an enemy creep or hero in terms of lane movement. But makes a difference on the enemy's gold and experience flow. Keep them down long enough, and they will end up weakened and delayed in items. Of course, don't risk your life just to deny a creep.

False. Eye of Skadi ranged isn't an Orb Effect. It works properly for her. Her first target gets slowed but not the units affected by Moon Glaives. By the way, nice strategy. Keep up the good work.

i suggest rushing for radiance. radiance and glaives will easily tear apart creepwaves. makes farming so much easier.

like what the others said, blink is much better than lothars. its a lot cheaper, blink-ulti is almost the same as lothars-ulti, and blinking over terrain helps against ganks. not to mention lothars has lots of counters (gem, wards, amp damage, track, etc)
next is that you should get lunar blessing only when you have butterfly. the damage increase is pathetic and stats will help you survive.

im glad you did not go for a caster luna. also, add heart as a late game item. luna is really easy to kill.

One more thing. Dark Terror will not allow you to "beat up your enemy freely" your range is so pathetic that you have to be almost at melee range to attack the enemy, and as soon as you walk in that chronosphere, ur stopped too.

Nice strat. You're pretty rich with your build eh?? Add aganhims scepter for total devastating ulti. It's a must for luna. Bait your enemy to the woods and when your sure no creeps followed you, cast eclipse. OUCH!! He's dead, if not, final blow him with lucent beam. definitely dead. I once played luna and my ally is sandking with blink. It was 4on4. They were trying to gank both of us while our 2 allies are bz farming on the other lane. SK cast his epicenter then blinked in the middel of enemies then I followed my Eclipse after.. Hahaha!!! 4 kills in one shot! I wasn't able to save the replay of that game. My ally said da*n I didn't even get one of them and we laughed hard.

like he said, this is a guide for a battle-type luna, not a spell-reliant luna. plus, in 6.44/6.44b, her ulti is incredibly nerfed. only 4 beams can hit a single target now (at least, at lvl 1 eclipse. not sure about lvl 2 or 3), so being able to cast more is pretty useless for one-on-one hero killing. but i suppose with an aganhim's she could hit multiple targets with the increased number of beams: an important factor in team games.

scepter on luna is a pretty bad choice. scepter is pretty expensive so she will finish it mid game if she rushed it. my point is, mid game is when heroes start pushing, which marks the start of team battles. in team battles, there's a good chance that eclipse will hit creeps, unless you have allies that can kill creepwaves in 2 seconds.

the thing with battle luna is that with +dmg and glaives, you will deal 'aoe' damage comparable to eclipse + scepter.

also, note that there's this item called hood of defiance that screws up most casters.

also, to the guy who said that eclipse was nerfed, its not. its actually buffed in the sense that it no longer depends on the level of lucent beam, so you will have eclipse's full potential even without maxing lucent beam.

YOU HAVE TO GET AGHNIMS AND ARCANE RING!!!! once you get aghnims no1 can 1v1 u if u get arcane ring heroes wont go in ur lane becuz lucent beam hurts and it has a 6 sec cooldown!!

it seems that too many posters have IQ below 50. always telling you to get scepter, when every reason on why not to get scepter has been said.

at the above poster, no one can one on one you even without the scepter, and luna needs more hp, not more mana, so bracers are prefered over arcane ring.

Also, the newest map makes her ulti not lucent-beam dependant, meaning you can have lvl 0 beam and still fire ulti-moon-beams up your opponents ass.

Your strat and late game item build are really effective and well explained, but i think your early game item build is questionable. I would go for early perseverance instead of bracers, because at the begining you worry usually isnt getting owned in a moment, its gradual dmg and having to either risk dying or go back for health. So HP regen is more important that pure health, and perseverance also lets you harass very effectively, because lucent beam is a good but of dmg on a low cooldown. You underestimate luna'w early game power imo, especially against really late bloomers and/or melee heroes, or low HP heroes such as vengeful spirit.

^^^^^^^^ also perseverance can be turned into linkens, which is a must have for luna against nukers, as she if often a primary target, whereas bracers just get sold later.

you forgot scepter it increases your ultimate by 3 more beams

i can say this once twice..... etc..... LUNA RULES!!!!! and well WE the Luna fans with this strategy are more than invencibles!!!!! I proved it in a game with my best friend...... hes really good... but..... I smashed it!!!!.... and he used pudge!!!! my worst enemy..... well..... this strategy is the CREAM!!!!!

its an orb. which means you might as well just have luna sit in the corner and cry since now her basic attack will not work. thus rendering the lifesteal from satanic useless anyways.

This is the best guide I've read on this site. I really like your skill build and explanation. 2 quick comments though.

1. Blink Dagger is insane on Luna. I tried it once and I don't think I'll play Luna without it. It's just that good.

2. I have always been an advocate of Butterfly as first item on Luna for farming purposes, however after playing this strat a few times I began to wonder...Would building an Aghanim's scepter first be a stronger play? Scepter + Blink Dagger is pretty strong. Butterfly is great for farming, but doesn't help much when it comes to hero battles.

Oh one more thing. There are programs like dota keys and war keys that let you customize your hotkeys. By doing this you can make your blink dagger liek one of your spells and simply one click gets you there.

ITS INSANE...

Trust me get the program and start using your items like they are meant to be used.

i reccomend for her is travel,refresher,scpter,satanic,butterfly,and lothars.she is a caster anyways and satanic doesnt mess up her attacks.lothars for sneaking behind enemy and eclipse with scepter and refreshre u can deal about 1000+dmg the n ugot lucent.

Just an info, i know the orb effect controversy with luna, but this afternoon i played against a luna who bought mask of death, and guess what? the lifesteal bounces. We went like wtf how does that work. there was an animation of a lifesteal by luna, but i'm not certainly sure, so coreect me if i'm wrong......

Personal input... I tried battle Luna a few times since reading this, and it works much better. Caster Luna still owns, but only until about 30mins in. Otherwise... not much.

My build (I, unlike 90% of people who say their own builds, am NOT saying that this is the ONLY WAY to play the hero):

RoR, 2xBracer, Power Treads, Lothars Edge, Butterfly*.

*Then its optional, situational items. Last time, I got a Heart, which they never saw coming.

I gave this 10/10 ages ago. Good.

oK. I havent readed all the strategy but at this point is good enough. Luna is a "godlike" hero if you can play her well enough. Just two things: 1) Eye of skadi is not an orb effect for range attacks (for those who think that will malfunction her attack) BUT is just too expensive i think is a waste on Luna. 2) Is it true, luna is a fragile hero thats why perhaps casting ulti and instantaneously windwalk will do it great! your enemies will dia without knowing what hit them.

not bad. but i would replace lothars with blink dagger and probably get an aghanims for hp, mp and more ulti dmg. and when will ppl learn...SKADI IS NOT AN ORB FOR RANGED...IF U DONT BELIEVE ME THEN TRY IT URSELF...it slows the first target and moon glaives dmg the next. in the recent dota versions the level of lucent beam doesnt affect eclipse. and yea she is kinda imba. if u kill a luna after she casted her ult it still goes off and it will hit u

skadi with butterfly with her 2nd skill does not work at all

very general build. dont know about assault cuirass on an agi hero--especially a butterfly-equiped one. and doesnt skadi mess with her moon glaives?

i think its dumb. you definetily need glaive. it bounces giving u better farming abilitys + harassing if they are close
i think luna owns way harder if u build with lifesteal

i think doesn't need burriza and skadi because it will not effect in luna's attack.. and skadi is not good for luna

Actually, I think ranged Skadi isn't an orb effect. That's what I was led to believe, because on other heroes, it stacks with other orb effects.

Sorry for double post, but I realize that the author already stated that ranged Skadi is not orb, but I still think it's amazing on her.

-MKB/Buriz
-Cuirass

Satanic works with Moon Glaive, NO KIDDING!!!

good one if u ask me... but ur info on who not to face is wrong... eclipse works on invis... so if alone against riki for example... u still get kill with ulti..^^

Only error your review is that yasha is not an orb item, it merely increases both attack and movement speed by 5% and an additional +16 to agility which overall, grants you an attack speed bonus of 21% (16% granted b 16 points of agility, and the 5% bonus) Its basicaly weak power treads.

Btw, its always my 3rd item to get for luna.

If she has 2 butterfly,satanic and buriza,all 5 enemy will focus on her and HoD will not save her if there is stunn effect like Chrono,overgrowth,swap from naga and attack form more than 400 range,rexxar ultimate and many long stun effect,she will hardly to time.
Why not get BKB,and in 10s she and kill 2 or 3 enemys.

PS,I get stat before beam in 1st lvl.

skadi doesn't work on luna... the animation is visible but no cold attack...

Well...IF late game, i prefer to buy

Very good explination, problem though. the item build doesn't take your through as thouroughly so ya thats pretty good overall

crit not so good does not work with bounce attack i prefer getting 4butterflys santanic and treads :D

huammm... pick the lucent beam is useless for luna.. pick the glaive and blessing then eclipse and luna can be the most powerfull hero

sorry if I double posted but I disagree with meepo being one of the heroes easy to kill..
he suppose to be one of your fears because:
10 divided by 4 = 3 lucent beams in 2 meepos 2 beams into the other 2 not to mention if you are level gap..

some people just underestimate meepo

yaknow, I am a strait up luna player and I say glaives at lvl one gives you excellent edge; ppl are afraid of aggro-ing damage, regardless of amount. They'll hang back, and you can reap the benefits. I disagree but you seem to have hit the points. gj

lol...firstly too expensive.. secondly ur not a tanker no need for randiance, third, satanic is a great item on luna, common la dps hero leh..early game killing is usually depends on her ulti's but late game do u think ppl r still morons?late game players usually stays together wif creeps,while creeps even increased when they push.how do u expect to alway get kills wif her ulti's? Even a hood is alrdy a complete ruin for luna for the whole game

First of all i really think that moon glaive is much more important than stats in the early game because it helps so much in farming !Getting gold is 1 o f the most important things in dotA...
Nevertheless i think u have missed something in the item build -linken's sphere when luna gets it -she just flies so my item build is : power threads,bracer,bracer,buriza,linken's sphere and if the game isnt over yet an eye of skadi once she get the buriza and the sphere she just pwns! :) gerat guide anyways keep going :)

You know, how about a satanic over a skadi? I don't find that an assault cuirass will be that useful too. 2 butterflies would be better actually. dmg+aspd. I'll say lothar's would be extremely handy since it'll enable you to sneak up on your opponent and cast eclipse. And a satanic increases your survivability rate and it has an active unholy strength so... Any ideas?

How come u didn't put Aghanim's Scepter for luna, u dumbo luna have a very low hp and mana...so scepter is a must for her...u can servive and can even make triple kill with scepter...u r just a fool...0/10

does the EoS work on all the glaives? i rather get lifesteal like satanic it doesnt really malfunction on luna with lifesteal it worked perfectly well and most ppl using luna buy lifesteal. i quite disagree with gettin assault its practically wasteful luna has no nids for armor and armor reduction i'd go for more butterflys it'll cover up the hyperstone good strat aniways

Hello, first of all I’d like to congratulate you on an awesome guide. I have used it many times and I must say, I have OWNED! lol.

Just one thing... LIFE STEAL DOES NOT AFFECT HER ATTACK! I repeat... if you buy life steal items you will still get moon glaive bounces and they will still damage the same amount. However, the life steal will only occur on the first hit, NOT on the glaive bounces. Just thought that this was an issue that needed bringing up!

Hey guys i just killed 4 heros with luna, and the 5th shit ran away...u know how??? with only 4 items at lvl 18...they ganked me and i killed 4 of them...with these items...
-> Power treads
-> Refresher Orb
-> Lothar's edge
-> Aghanims Secpter
I saw them and casted my ulti, and then refreshed it and again casted it...believe me 4 kills in 4 sec...though i was lucky they were low hp hero's and the 5 one the tanker ran away...

y not buy a dominator for lifesteal??? its very useful since luna's attack bounces several times .. then butterfly.. after that satanic

when using luna, get satanic...when you have low life, just farm and your life will come back in no time...My friends use satanic for luna and it is very good for her. gud strat though 8/10

Item build: Satanic - yes bounce also applies, Lothar's, butterfly, treads - not travel cause treads give atck spd wraith bands and radiance. dud never skadi cause orb affects don't work with luna. ^^ just saying...

yeah...I didn't quite get your early game gank and "deny tactics" umm...is there a way you could make it less complicated...but overall it's a great strat I got Beyond Godlike because of it

the luna guides are old ones i suppose eclipse cost lesser now..but not much difference i think

i agree with most of the strategies but i rather build satanic instead of eye. also i would discard the lothars. if you already have your butterfly and satanic you would be very strong add some hit points.if your very lucky in farming or good at it then you may also heve buriza. if your oppnents has many hitpoimts change ur burixa to heart. when you hae these items you will be very stong hero. oh well dats what i think anyway since i already tried this built.

lol skudi cancels moon glaive and i rather get satanic manta style nooob totally noob satanic gives lifesteal per moon glaive hit and manta style gives more damage fool

u can replace radiance with satanic...

with satanic u can regain over 150 hp depending on yur damage and how much yur lifesteal bounces
